110 lbs. of potatoes doesn’t seem like that much to make it illegal. I would think a busy restaurant would have at least that much on hand at any given time. I’m guessing that they had a problem with people using the potatoes to make distilled spirits.
OK, I’ll bite. WHY would WA declare 110 lbs (50 kg) of potatoes to be illegal to possess? (Here in the US, a typical large potato sack size is the 100 lb denomination. A typical McDonalds franchise has stacks of those in the basement.) Are the citizens of Perth potato hoarders? Are the Australian authorities afraid the potatoes will mate and overpopulate the landscape? Does such potato domination threaten the colonies of spud carvers? Do I have to visit West Jakarta to inquire directly of Jonathan Wijaya? And how does he even know, if he’s not Australian?
I looked into the potato thing, and from what I found it was that you couldn’t have more than 110 pounds (50 kg) of potatoes in your vehicle. No one seems to be entirely sure why the law was passed in the first place, but, as others have noted, it was repealed a few years ago.
Australian potato law repealed. It was a holdover from the Great Depression, like a lot of similarly stupid U.S. laws that are still in effect.
I’m translating the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition into similar rules for those who worship government, like the “Progressives” of over a century ago, and their modern bi-partisan successors.
At least one of them applies here. The first, as it happens.

What is it about 110+ pounds of potatoes that presents a threat? Are they fearful of a spud-gun mass shooting at a school?

Potatoes.
Even as poisonous and venomous as so much of nature is in Australia, it looks like the politicians have them beat.

I guess bride’s fathers in Indonesia don’t like to spend a lot of money on wedding receptions, maybe they have to spend a lot on dowries.
