Well, after having had cats for the past 50 years, I can say that the answer to that is “not really”. There are times when mine have been briefly mesmerized by action, but that’s it. Judging from your sign-in name, I think you will appreciate this: Many years ago, I had a tuxedo kitten given to me by a student. I was trying to find a suitable name for her, but was stumped. One day I was watching a Cubs game. The kitten jumped up on my shoulder and was absolutely hypnotized by Sammy Sosa’s at-bat. And he got a home run! Needless to say, her name from that time on was Sammy.
Years ago we called all cat treats “Friskies”. One of our cats definitely understood the TV because if he heard a Friskies commercial, especially that one that went ,“If it says Friskies, Friskies, Friskies…”, he would run into the kitchen and start yelling for his treats … and he had a very loud voice. We hated that advert!
I worked at a place that was near a store that sold “Carnation’s Special Dinners”. It was the only place I could find it so, I would buy 4 or 5 boxes at a time. A few of my co-workers would get their checks cashed there and would see me buying the cat food. I, jokingly, said that it tasted better than “Hamburger Helper”. They would give me the strangest looks and I would laugh. The ones that knew me would tell them that it was for my cats, not me. LOL
Our latest adoption, Jackie, has decided that she is old enough to eat her big sisters’ food. This evening she tried to bury her kitten supper as soon as we put it down. The big girls were not impressed when she tried to nose into their dishes.

I wonder if a cat can actually understand a television. I do not think so.

We never do. We’re all too focused on cute kitten videos on youtube. And, of course, we pay extra to block ads.

I think Peekaboo has a crush on the actor cat.
