Go ask Spot. I think he’ll know…(from “White Beagle” by Jefferson Kennel)

I think it derives from the bottom of the fire hydrant in front of his dog house.

In case anyone is interested it actually means ‘red headed.’ I worked with a dog for some time named Rusty (it is common for a name, I know), he was a great boy, a Rhodesian Ridge-back mixture just like one of my dogs.

I had a dog named spot because that’s what he would always leave on the rug

Walt Disney’s Pluto was named after the Roman god of the underworld… or perhaps in Disney’s case underwear. :>)

If the second dog was French, it might be spelled Phaideaux.

Trivia: The three headed guard to the underworld is Cerberus. ‘Cerberus’ may come from ‘Kerberos’, meaning ‘spotted’. So… the lord of the underworld named his dog ‘Spot’.

I named my last dog Buddy. That way strangers had about a 50% chance of getting it right: “Hey there, Buddy!” My second choice was “pal.”
