I wonder what keeps them together. Is there some spell? Or some bond we don’t know about that’s unbreakable no matter how much they despise each other? Or is it the sheer weight of comedic tension?

The talking at someone is the therapeutic part, getting it off one’s chest. The listening does not need to happen, and at least the monster doesn’t start giving Gary life advice at this point.
