With so many people not being able to go to work, open for business, comply with quarantine restrictions… I expect quite a few businesses to either die… or become extinct.
What is the big deal with the stock market? It is little more than a confidence index for the very rich and for institutions. Except for IPOs, not one dime of the millions flowing through the stock market contribute anything useful to the economy. The only money that may make it into the economy are the commissions paid to the already overpaid brokers and investment managers.
Ignoring psychological effects, IBM stock could go to one dollar a share and so long as they are still turning profits of several billion dollars a year, what difference would their stock price make? None. The price of a company’s stock does not contribute one thing to how well the company is run or how it is run at all. Unfortunately, the reverse is not true. Many companies are run to ensure the stock price keeps going up. They do this by sending jobs overseas, cutting staffs to the bone, and/or using cheaper raw materials. Wall Street has become the de facto management of far too many large corporations.
We pay far too much attention to the stock market. Leave it to those whose business it is. If the market dropped dramatically tomorrow, would it really make any difference in your life? Certainly not mine. My day to day existence is not affected by the swings in the market.

I was told as a young lad that “playing the stock market” was like going to Los Vegas. Fortunately or unfortunately I can’t afford to do either.

Relax. When it’s down, just means everything’s on sale. Buy low – sell high.
