I’m impressed, the first dozen times I saw “Porco Rosso” was a friend’s Japanese language bootleg version and the only words I learned were Bacha (Grandmother) and Oh Se (shut up) and I thought Bacha meant witch.
It’s my understanding that the color referred to by ao was the entire spectrum from green to blue. Modern Japanese has apparently adopted the word midori to refer to green only and, by default, ao has come to mean blue although it retains the traditional meaning as well. I won’t swear to the truth of this…never took Japanese…just a tidbit of trivia I picked up.

Strange – I thought “Dr. Ao” was Ed McMahon’s alias.I’ll let myself out.

IN the past some peoples did have trouble explaining green as different from blue yet related to it.
