I find it very easy to leave without buying anything, even if I’m the only one in there. The smaller the shop, the less time it takes me to decide there’s nothing there I want.
Unless it’s a used book store. But there are fewer and fewer of those around.
My son, the least Japanese-looking person you’d ever meet, speaks fluent Japanese. He was once browsing in a Tokyo shop and overheard the two sales clerks use the word “handsome.” He happened to be the only man in the shop at the time. Because business was slow, the women were drinking tea while they chatted. He walked up to them and asked them in Japanese if they were talking about him. He said they were so surprised, they spewed their tea.

You gotta be you. If you’re not interested, you’re not interested. Say, “Thank you”, or, “Have a great day”, and walk out.

I especially feel like a vip when the owner follows me around the shop, because, well, you can guess why.

Rules, rules, rules. And most of them aren’t even written down somewhere. Still you will soon be punched into pulp if you don’t obey.
