Mickey & pals were a help, but Di$ney really built an empire on works in the public domain (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, etc.) – then lobbied strenuously (and successfully) to extend the length of copyrights, so no else could use either their stuff or the stuff they’d appropriated.
