People love Megan's law- who wouldn't want to know that an ex-con pervert was living next door? (Man 1: Hmmm... the cops say our new neighbor was a statutory rapist in 1958.) (Woman: Cool- let's kick his ass!) Instead of longer prison terms, society is saving millions of justice dollars by subjecting criminals to public humiliation. (Man 2: For the brutal rape of childre, I hereby sentence you to 4 weeks in prison plus prolonged press coverage of this case.) (Man 3: Fascist!) The question is: why not force miscreants to simply wear t-shirts describing their crimes? We'll rely on social pressure to penalize wrongdoers! Since everyone is guilty of something, however, who will hold the moral high ground? (Man 4: Look at the new fish- let's kick his ass!) (Man 5: Wait- you can't do that! This isn't prison, you know!)
