The Business Cycle Man 1: Sure, it'd be nice to do something about poverty, but... Man 2: Let's wait until the economy picks up! Woman: Of course we need to fund a national health plan, but the markets are jittery right now. Man 1: Raising taxes now would put us back into a recession! Man 2: There just isn't any political will to pass any new programs- people are too busy working multiple jobs to focus! Man 1: Besides, with unemployment this low, anyone who's poor has no one to blame but themselves! We really should have built that safety net when we had the money. Yeah- we should have prepared for this! Anyway, let's fire some people.
