In response to requests from yesterday, I looked up those old newspapers that we found in our kitchen wall when we remodeled. One of the papers was the New York Weekly Witness dated June 19, 1889. The price for this paper was 3 cents a copy or a one year subscription for $1. The others were the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Times from June 1889. The papers are in pretty rough shape and very hard to read. Very brittle and brown and the font is so teeny tiny, I wonder how people were able to read hem. Not a lot of ads, but there was a piece on how to remove tattoos from your skin. The principle ingredients for the tattoo removal stuff are tannin and nitrate of silver. There was an ad for men’s pure silk Japanese handkerchiefs “worth 75 cents at 42 cents”. And an ad for shoes “tennis, bicycle and vacation shoes” for men & women, with prices ranging from 50 cents a pair to $1.75 a pair. I read part of a news story about a woman who “became deranged” and she attacked her 2 daughters with an ax and she threw them down the well, but that part of the paper was so shredded up, a lot of the words were missing. I got where it said they were rescued, but then it said they……expected to die – I don’t know if it said they were or were not expected to die because that part was missing. I wish the papers were easier to read because they would have been interesting.
