National Weed Appreciation Day. Not talking about “pot”, but lawn weeds, like dandelions. I love dandelions. National Weed Appreciation Day on March 28th each year reminds us that some weeds are beneficial to us and our ecosystem. Humans have used weeds for food and as herbs for much of recorded history. Some are edible and nutritious, while other weeds have medicinal value. Do you remember as a small child the fun you had with dandelions? Well, these bright yellow flowers serve a purpose. Dandelions are a food source for insects and some birds. Humans eat young dandelion leaves and enjoy tea and wine made from the leaves and flowers. The Native Americans used dandelions to treat specific ailments. Nutritionally, dandelions contain a source of vitamin A and C, calcium, iron, and fiber. Before using any weed as a food source, make sure it is correctly identified and free of herbicides and pesticides. Research the safe edible part of each weed and find useful cooking and preparation tips.
Barb (Queen) says to wish her luck. She’s off to surgery to remove stent and stone. I say it sounds like a Specialty Store. Anyway, be thinking of her and fingers crossed all goes well. She’s been in a LOT of pain stomach wise and finally figured out it was the Sulfa medicine. One step forward a mile back.
Just a few hours ago I arrived back home again. The bad news: Yesterday, soon after I arrived at daughter’s house in CT, she suddenly blurted out “Oh, f…..k!!! I forgot to take the covid test yesterday!" This morning she rescheduled her surgery for April 22nd. Her husband requested a day off this time so he could accompany her. The good news is that I delivered her bicycle (it’s been in my garage for some years taking up space) and made a delicious corned beef and cabbage dinner for us all. Her surgery is elective…no way comparable to what our Queen is suffering from. Oh, and the 8 month old Calico kitten and I had a blissful reunion! She has become a pudge ball.
Light snacks, eh? I wonder if they’ll be served with cheese? (Yeah, yeah, I know mice don’t really like cheese.) On another note, saw six robins, two chickadees, a squirrel, four juncos, and two wrens while out walking today.
Yes ~ might as well fatten them up a bit. Our neighborhood birds are flying all over again. So nice to see them. I think we have residents for all our birdhouses now.

I hope Queen’s surgery went exceptionally well and that she is pain free tonight.
