It’s hard to believe, but it is also the one-year anniversary of the day my brother, Paul died of a heart attack while running a race. And to think he died just a few weeks after telling us that he believed he was so healthy – he said that he and I would outlive every other member of the family because we were the healthiest. I hope that didn’t put the jinx on me! If there is a bright spot, it’s that he died while doing something he loved.
Also hard to believe, my sister Ruth died October 27, 1968. It doesn’t seem possible that she’s been gone for 56 years now! I’ve come to dislike the month of October. On Halloween night of 1990, my dad died at the age of 76. Technically, since he died shortly after midnight, he died in November, not October. But I can’t help seeing it as Halloween. October seems to be an unlucky month for our family.
From yesterday’s comments to jessegooddoggy who said, “I’m back home with the Siamese who is hiding behind the hot water heater and hissing at me.”
First of all, congratulations on getting not just one, but 2 new cats! I just wanted to say that I know how it is, having a new cat sitting and hissing at you. When I got CeeCee from my sister. Mary got CeeCee from a friend who got her from a friend. Mary’s friend agreed to take CeeCee (whose name then was Bronwyn) temporarily from a friend of his, but that friend never came back for her. Mary’s friend couldn’t keep the cat because his girlfriend was allergic to cats. If they couldn’t get someone to take CeeCee, they were going to have to take her back to the shelter where she had come from. And sucker that I am, I couldn’t bear that though. The poor cat had gone from a shelter, to some adopter who then dumped her on someone else who then could not keep her. And then to be picked up by Mary and shoved in a carrier for a 3-hour car trip to my house where there were all these other cats – it’s no wonder she wasn’t ready to be buddies with me. I kept her in the upstairs bathroom for a while and she hid behind the cabinet I keep my towels in and she hissed and growled at me and I half expected her to jump out and attack me. She eventually settled down and is very friendly now. And, of course, I had Annie and her feral kittens, Panther, Pebbles and Cindy all hissing at me after I trapped them and brought them in the house. Panther still won’t let me pet her and I can only pet Annie at canned cat food feeding time, but Pebbles is a lap cat now. Cindy is friendly, but not a lap sitter.
I hope your new kitties settle in quickly and the Siamese stops hissing at you.
That’s quite a feat, opening its jaws without it falling apart. A few of you saw my update yesterday, but here goes. All animals had to be off the property yesterday, and the daughter whose mother died had no idea what she was going to do with the remaining cat as her own fights with other cats. She had found homes for 2 others plus the siamese I took, along with 8 of her mom’s 11 little dogs. I looked at the other beautiful mostly white cat with a few grey patches and a beautiful striped tail and said I would take him also. She just started crying, she was so happy and relieved. This cat was named Curly Joe, I call him Joey. He ate and drank before going into hiding for a few hours, the siamese constantly hissed in his tight hiding place while allowing me to pet him. But he came out last night and they played together!!! Joey purrs almost constantly, even while eating. The siamese is still skittish but came up to me when I got up and allowed me to pet him and pick him up. So all is progressing well in less than 24 hours l!!!! And of course 2 bonded cats adjust easier in a strange new home, I’m really glad I made the split second decision to also take him. Now to give Sammy a better name, my sister suggested Olive, it might suit him.
