By-passing the Middle Man. Everybody is doing it. Makes a lot of middle managers nervous.

    Today is:

    NATIONAL PASTRY DAY

    WEARY WILLIE DAY

    LUTEFISK DAY

    CHRISTMAS CARD DAY

Monday! I LOVE Mondays because that’s my day off (Thursdays too) and I am sooooo tired right now. I think I worked too hard yesterday. But I got a lot done. I even finished all those carts of Christmas “returns” – it must have been about 6 shopping carts full. I didn’t touch the toys. Nobody else did toy returns either. Robert worked toys freight but I don’t think he put a very big dent in it. But I will enjoy doing absolutely NOTHING today (actually, there are a few little things I need to do, but probably 80% of the day will be spent doing nothing).

From yesterday’s comments – Catwoman had this to say, “@dbrucepm I’m afraid that is the Walmart way of training now days. It wasn’t that way when I started in 2005 at Walmart. Tell her to just do what she can during her scheduled time and don’t go above and beyond. Once she does that, she’ll be expected to that everyday and stay late if they allow overtime. I’ve learned not to do that anymore. I guess I got older and wiser over the years!!”

I agree with this advice. The more you do, the more certain managers expect you to do even more. I know my Walmart would like me to learn how to do hunting and fishing licenses, but I won’t let them teach me because then I would constantly be getting paged to the sporting goods desk to do that. And I don’t want to do that! I know how to cashier, but we have good team leads up front who know how hard I work and how important I am on the sales floor, so they try never to ask me to cashier. Our store manager won’t give us overtime. In fact, he is CUTTING HOURS even in this demanding time of year. Not cutting their better workers (like me) by a lot, but I’ve been getting cut an hour or two a week. And he raises a stink if we go over our scheduled hours. And he still expects us to get more done every day. I don’t know how many hours other people are being cut. We don’t have a very big overnight crew. But whatever they have, they don’t seem to get much done because our first shift comes in to find a LOT of freight undone. And on the rare occasions that they work Christmas freight (or garden center or Halloween or whatever season it is), they don’t do it right, so I actually prefer to do it myself. Overnight people never do returns. If it isn’t too busy, cashiers sometimes help with that, but not often. I work second shift, from 2:00 to 11:00.

All that said, I still like my job. I get a lot of satisfaction from what I do. By the way, my 20-year anniversary is March 24 next year.

Jeff had better give her everything she wants. Even billionaires aren’t protected from the wrath of Lily! On another note, saw eight golden crowned kinglets and four varied thrushes while out walking today.

I have a wish list a mile long on the Big A, and Jeff has not felt inclined to grant my wishes.
