The upside of being a muse is there’s no heavy lifting.

There’s a Muse on the loose!

    The great French composer Rameau/

Needed something to make him go/

And the thing that worked best/

Was the sight of a breast/

    A-warming his cold studio///

    Or perhaps this is Couperin/

    An equally talented man/

    Who regaled both the Queen/

    And Louis Fourteen/

    With Pieces du Clavecin///

It may be some lesser-known bloke/

But it looks like the French Baroque/

    But whatever the setting/

    There’s just no forgetting/

That a naked girl ain’t no joke..

/// When Ma’m’selle de Maupin first appeared

to d’Albert, his heart raced, his eyes teared.

    His dream-girl had a plan

to dress up as a man

and seduce D’Albert’s mistress. How weird!

There are many other artworks that refer to the novel, “Mademoiselle de Maupin” by Theophile Gautier, that was written in 1835. This link provides an English translation to Volume One of the novel:

Greta’s idea was moderately effective at protecting her dress while cooking, but showed a distinct down side when deep frying chicken (Ow! Those painful oil spatters.)

You can give those bazoombas a bounce / They’re right there with the best, ounce for ounce / But to prove you’re not male / As set forth in the tale / You need to be showing what counts.

    Mademoiselle de Maupin:

    Paste (including the quote marks)

    "Category:Jean Lecomte du Nouÿ" site=commons.wikimedia.org

(syntax supported by the Google, Yahoo, Bing, Duckduckgo, Ecosia, and Yandex search engines) in the address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and click the first Category: found, and once there, search for the maupin text string, and click its link for info and links that point to more info about this painting.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by merely clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s THROWBACK THURSDAY: MASTERPIECE #2034 (9/7/18) (January 25, 2023) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment. I have added a comment there (awaiting Mr. Melcher’s approval) pointing to the artist info I used to point to here. First work by this artist used here (2 times total, including this Throwback Thursday repeat), the September 7, 2018, strip being its first use.

/// They both lived in a lighthouse so damp,

his wife left him and cheated— (the tramp!).

    He makes love now, instead

    to a ship’s figurehead,

glowing gold from the tower’s bright lamp.
