When her young student declared that she was going to be married off (against her will) to a man three times her age, Judith came up with a plan to smuggle her away from that abhorrent family after music lessons that very day.
Manet’s favorite model, Victorine Meurent, stood in for an actual “Street Singer,” who declined to pose, and went away laughing — thus unknowingly losing the chance of a bit of artistic immortality.
In my imagination the pictured singer left the cabaret discouraged, as even in burlesque, proper enunciation is important. Thus she will fill her mouth with cherries to practice clear singing style, as the Ancient Greek Demosthenes filled his mouth with pebbles to practice clear oratory.
As model, Victorine seems to gaze with studied indifference at the onlooker, as if to pout, “Me you rent? I am no ‘demi-mondaine’!” With some effort, she resists braining him with her guitar.
(It might be of interest to realize that while here Mlle. Meurent poses in voluminous clothing, when in pose for Manet’s “Olympia” she wore only a black neck ribbon, pearl earrings, a bracelet, and an orchid in her hair! Oh … and slippers!)
“I hate grapes! I can’t stand grapes! I loathe grapes! All kinds of grapes! I hate purple grapes! I hate green grapes! I hate grapes with seeds! I hate grapes without seeds! I hate them peeled and non-peeled! I hate grapes in bunches, one at a time, or in groups of twos and threes! I f-ing hate grapes!” – Psychos in Love

/// Manet’s Street Singer stops for a snack,
gobbling fruit from a brown paper sack.
She believes, (though some scoff),
that wild cherries cure cough.
People pay her to sing, not to hack.
