The one meal my mother made that I couldn’t tolerate. Also spinach. I asked her to serve spinach with the liver and onions (since I couldn’t talk her out of making them altogether) so only one meal was a wipe out, not two. I didn’t have trouble with anything else she made other than that she didn’t know how to chop an onion properly.

Liver is the one thing that I have found that triggers a gag reflex in me. It can’t make it past my tongue. And I’ll try just about anything once.

Hang about Brutus. I love fried Beef Liver/with gravy, onions and rice. Not boiled liver in rice as some folks mutilate food. And if any leftover, I make myself a late liver sandwich with mayo. Raised on a farm. Ate it all. Hunted and fished. When you grow up in need – food is good. My late wife was blessed with same skills. Raise it and eat it.

I’ve always loved liver (both beef and chicken) with onions but have it only very rarely since it’s not exactly the healthiest thing in the world (contrary to what my mother and grandmother might have naively once believed).

To this day, the smell of liver cooking makes me want to vomit. Very few things I have experienced in life have a vomit-inducing smell and that is one of them.

Then when you think about what the liver does in the body, it’s worse for me. I don’t want to eat a body filter. Nasty.

In my experience liver and onions is one of those dishes where someone either knows how to prepare it or they don’t. Too many people end up with liver that tastes, and chews, like shoe leather. Thankfully there are those (like the cook at a local bar I eat at every two or three months) who can make it flavorful and tender. I loved it when my grandma made it (them?), they were wonderful, but somehow my mother never had the knack. Hers was so-so.
