Generally the male bird has the brighter coloring. I don’t know what’s going on with “Alice” and his partner with the binoculars.

Much as I’ve heard that (Naked as a Jaybird) I have never seen one deplumbed. I wonder how the saying started. And I like to feel that I have an “expectation of privacy” in my house, and if I step out to swim that way (I DO have solid 6’ walls).

DAZZ: They are altricial (hatch without feathers), but most birds do (exceptions: fowl and aquatics like ducks, etc. which hatch will a full coat of down). Killdeer hatch with the same color pattern as adults. These precocial species are able to get around on their own within minutes of hatching. A related saying is “a scandal to the jaybirds”, from the habit of eating other bird’s nestlings and similar anthropomorphically bad behavior.
