I enjoy the way Hillburn anthropomorphizes (attributes human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object) the subjects in his cartoons. I did that all the time as a child — as regards cars, houses, household appliances, etc. — and still do, to some extent. So many hours of watching cartoons on TV have thus affected me.

Considering how many churches there are in California, many dating back to the time when California was a Spanish colony, that “separation” is going to take a lot of work.

I remember a bumper sticker I saw on an old Merc’ going down I-5 in 1976, about the time of the Manson murders. “Jesus is coming, and boy is he mad!”

Now, burn down the Church!!!!!!!

Good. Keeping a church from meddling in the State is the best way to ensure freedom and liberty for all.

They are supposed to be separate anyway.

They’re strange bedfellows.

I’d say that California is leading the way in separating the “haves” from the “have nots”. There could come a day when only the rich and the criminals that prey on them for a living will be the only residents. Calfornia, thy gold has turned to pyrite.

Maybe a separation from Idaho?

You’d think it’d be Michigan. That’s where Hell is.

We Americans should take it as a point of pride that we were the first nation on Earth to recognize that both state and church are better off if neither controls the other. Look at the extent to which churches have thrived in the open-market environment in this country, where the government behaves neutrally toward all of them, neither promoting nor suppressing any, leaving them to rise or fall on their own merits.

Soon, be patient, soon she will float away to plug the Panama Canal.

Maybe it’s time we see other concepts!

I find it hard to believe the church would be asking for a separation.

The way California is governed and the laws they have on the books certainly do not smack of ANYTHING Christian.

Cal can hang out with Al, Ari, Connie, Ida, Ken, Lou, Mary, Minnie, Monty, Neve, and Penny.

A separation of nearly 250 years doesn’t seem long enough…

California is now home to the largest Catholic Church in North America. I live less than a mile away from it and it is beautiful. Construction is still continuing on the annex buildings. The church bells have just recently started to toll on the hour from sunrise to sunset.

Odd to pick such a BLUE state and depict it as Orange when a RED state, say one that has a big ol’ bible-belt, would be a better example of where some separation would be more helpful. Or is it that the someone thinks Californians need Jesus? Jesus is the guy who does their lawn and he stops by twice a month.
