This was half a jab at WHYY in Philadelphia, who had shown “Are You Being Served” at 7:30 each weeknight from at least 1990 through the mid oughts. But it holds up for most PBS stations in the United States.
This strip was left out of the original edition of “We Are Not Amusing” because I didn’t want to be bothered clearing the image of Molly Sugden for print. It’s now back in the expanded edition E-Book version, and the version in “Meet The Royals.”
The Good Neighbors … thanks to local PBS stations, I imagine an England trapped in the ’70s. Until I saw “Secret Diary of a Call Girl”, I didn’t think they had cell phones over there!
Pabs, I know whereof you speak. WHYY and many PBS stations expect people to respond to their beg-a-thons and yet continue to show 15 to 20 year old BBC programmming as if it were the latest gold standard. Mind you, I thoroughly enjoy watching many of those programs the first time, but like the Hallmark channel (or whatever station shows those reruns I don’t watch) with MAS*H, it gets tiring after the 23rd rerun.
While I’m a big fan, How ‘bout a string of the very worst Dr. Who classic episodes. You know, the ones with the worst acting, or the most ridiculous of monsters or the sets that wobble like Plan 9 from Outer Space. Or how ‘bout Plan 9 itself?
If you liked “Plan 9” (voted worst movie ever made) then you all should love “Zombies of the Stratosphere” (voted worst serial ever made) - Oh, and BTW it was the first movie role for Leonard Nimoy; he played a Martian…
PAB, back in the early days PBS showed good programming, but even then, much was purchased from BBC. The Boston station did a lot of original stuff. I used to be a supporter, but not that they have a lot of leftist political shows, I only watch the operas and Masterpiece mysterys and such. I prefer Bravo, Food Channel, HGTV, and even a few network shows like Mentalist, Lie to Me. I also catch a lot on History Channels.
I have VHS tapes filled with super programs I recorded from the Learning Channel (“Possibly the best channel ever!”) back in the ‘80’s The commercial breaks list the other excellent programs coming up next.
Then they moved the good programs to pay tv. Now the channel is unwatchable c r a p!

Sadly, only three regulars are still alive: Frank Thornton, Trevor Bannister and Nicholas Smith.

At least it’s not Coronation Street - that toxic spill managed to leak all the way over to the CBC in Canada…

If she REALLY wanted to punish the viewers, she’d run a back-to-back marathon of “Ishtar,” “Heaven’s Gate,” and “Gigli.”
Of course, I’m not sure even the Gestapo was that cruel..

Just remember, they may be reruns (of reruns) to some, but to others, it’s all brand new!

For the very worst Dr Who episodes, I nominate anything with Amy Pond, ugh! Karen Gillan is the worst companion ever.

Shucks, my mother didn’t even watch Lawrence Welk when he was FIRST on TV. The PBS stations around here wouldn’t dream of dropping him.

When my local PBS station begs for money, they usually show marathons of Red Dwarf…
