I would ALWAYS hoard the licorice from the candy bowl at our firm’s entry. Red are plastic ties. I met an incredible redhead who took me to task for stealing HER licorice candy. (:-)
Though the real thing can be found in the USA, most of what we have is the imitation. That being said, I like both… but the real thing is for some an “acquired taste”.
The real stuff is also low-grade toxic. It can be fatal, but you’d have to eat multiple bags every day for many weeks before any negative effects would manifest.
There used to be a small Mom and Pop grocery store in Eugene, Oregon, where my sister and I used to go to get our jelly beans. They had a glass container filled with all black ones! Yum!
I was pretty little when Mom and I were sampling some mixed candies someone had sent us. I reached for a black one. “You might not..” Mom started to say. “Oh, you DO!”
There was always someone who was handing out Good n Plenty or bags of Allsorts, likely because they liked liquorice, and there would always be leftovers….
Lord, how I miss Switzer’s Licorice. Looked like tire tread but tasted great. Even better were those nights when a thermal inversion would settle over the St. Louis riverfront and the smell of licorice was everywhere. Diabetics had to hold their breath all the way from the office to the parking lot. Good times.
That’s what Moms are for. to eat the candy you don’t want. Dads are the ones that will take from the best candy bars you get, as the the Alpha Wolves that they are……
I am enthralled by Sterling; who seems to respond to mass ingestion of sugar by becoming more thoughtful, and at least superficially rational. He is using complete sentences and expressing complex concepts. “But at what cost?” is the most cohesive logic I have ever heard from him! I hope he becomes a philosophical “Popeye” who’s intellectual capacity vastly expands when he powers down a couple of pillow cases of candy. Just as spinach makes Popeye’s muscles explode, candy makes Sterling’s brain hyper powerful and causes him to become inert and sagacious.
As a Dutch guy I have to agree with mom. Also, no shortage of black licorice here. It is one of the most common candy here and they come in all sorts. In fact, eating them right now.

Win-win. If you guys don’t like it but Mom does,That means she’ll be less likely to get the stuff you like.

I always thought black licorice is the only one until I visited the USA. Never got used to the red licorice and still love the black.

If it is not black and not liquorice flavored, it is NOT liquorice.

I like how Mom is getting a collective stink eye in the 4th panel.

A free supply of that “candy” made by Michelin Tire off-cuts to bribe-persuade-distract your mother? A kid couldn’t have a better scenario.

My mother liked black licorice too. I tried it…didn’t like it.

Even the dad’s leaning in with a look of “…really?”
Personally, I’ve never been a fan of licorice of any color.
