Actually in medieval times people had fairly healthy teeth because they ate less sugar than we do today. And if you needed a tooth pulled the local barber would do it.
Before anesthetics people just had to endure the pain to have their teeth worked on.
Not long ago I had to have a couple of small cavities filled. The dentist was going to deaden my mouth. I really hate that lingering numb feeling in my mouth. I asked him if we could try it first without numbing my mouth. He said, “OK, we’ll try it that way first. We can always deaden it if you need it.”
It hurt some but it never got to a point that I couldn’t endure it. Afterward I felt just fine without a dead mouth. If the cavities had been bigger, I don’t know if I would have been able to do it without anesthetic.
Nitrous barely touches me. Perfect pitch is a detriment at the dentist because the drill and everything else goes off-pitch to the point where I say that they need to take that out and have it tuned properly.
Believe me – I know the feeling! I’d hate to see my chart. The staff fight over who is allowed to take a personal day when name shows up on the schedule!

And then afterward, he’ll either exaggerate about how painful it was or say that it was a piece of cake…

I’d be nervous too, if my dentist used a mortuary table.
