What were rifles called before they were rifled?

My first job was working in an amusement park and every evening they would shoot the guy out of the cannon. No matter how many times I saw it I was amazed. Thankfully, he never missed the net.

Usually rifled cannons can shoot much further than smoothbore ones. However, it appears that those flailing appendages destroyed any aerodynamic advantage Bung might have had, so he landed in the net anyway.
