Why is she not allowed to stay up? Difficult to understand as I allowed my children as soon as they were physically able to… But then, people in USA seem to go to bed much earlier in general.

You have much to learn Katy. If you are actually able to stay up that late, do the following. Go to bed as usual. Pretend to sleep (you can hide your game boy/cell phone/ book and a torch under your blanket to avoid boredom and the real thing). At ten to midnight get up. Don’t forget to act all sleepy. Tell your parents that you woke up because of the noise and that you are thirsty and can’t go back to sleep. By the time it’s all sorted out, the ball will have dropped. Goal achieved.

Meh, my grandma (kept us kids so the parents could go party) was brilliant with us kids until we learned about the time zones. She’d set the clocks ahead to eastern time so that when the ball dropped it was bed time. Might not work for everyone but it got us all in bed at a much better time.

Ugh, I’m trying to make it to midnight myself.

I admit I’ll probably be in the bed around the same time.

I have no problem letting my 8 year old stay up til midnight if she can make it. She’ll be back to the school routine soon, in bed by 9. One night won’t hurt.

I work from 4.00 pm to midnight. The closer it gets to quitting time, the more awake I become.
