Arlo has fantastic reflexes. He managed to put his shoes on while jumping around looking for that ember:)

If his reflexes were REALLY good, he would have been able to get out of the way. Maybe that’s why he had time to put on his shoes. lol

Now that you had your disagreement go into the next room and make out…I mean make it up to each other.

So why doesn’t the dolt have a fireplace screen to prevent embers from popping out onto the floor and burning the house down?

Arlo was commenting on her ability to video the event. (Maybe it will go viral.)

But how did he go from socks to shoes?

I’m going to go against the grain here (so to speak). The “ember” still looks like popcorn to me. Viewing the third panel, I thought that maybe Arlo was juggling the hot kernel. I don’t know why he felt it necessary to halfway jam on his shoes. Today’s comic needs more exegesis than most, even for “A & J.”

I admit, the shoes would argue for the ember in the rug. But why was the ember shaped like popcorn?

stlmaddog5: Redcedar (really a juniper) and bois d’arc can propel sparks right through a fire screen. Glass ones divert almost all the heat up the chimney. “Airtight” stoves won’t please a pyromaniac, but I have seen my Jøtul suck an escaping spark right back into the stove.

Arlo’s no “dolt”! I never have wanted a screen between the fire and me. You just have to “stay on your toes”!

Is Janis supposed to be laughing in panel 4? Seems she’s yelling angrily at Arlo.

It looks to me like she’s laughing and he’s embarrassedly angry.

Pecans are fun to toss in a fire.Sometimes they come out as pecan-shaped coals like rockets, shoot across the floor, come back, spin around, explode.GOOD TIMES.Don’t do this yourself. We were stupid way back then.
