They would know who John Hancock was if they had the teachers we had.

Come to my class. My students not only know Hancock but have learned the Bill of Rights and can explain them using SCOTUS precedent.

In my job I often hand people papers to sign. More of them quip, “Put my ‘John Henry’ here” than say “John Hancock.” Sigh.

They teach who he is. The commercial Arlo is talking about would not work if it’s audience didn’t know it. The usage of the name to denote a signature is declining. More generally, the words “John Hancock” peaks in the American English corpus that Google’s Ngram viewer uses back in 1940 (oddly the peak before that was 1840), dropped to about half in 2000, and has been declining much faster since then.

I don’t know what’s more amusing! The Comic strip I came to read, or all of the political bickering in the comments! “Hey Ma! Come ‘er and look at du pot callin’ de kettle ‘Black’! Yuck yuck!!!” Don’t care what side of the aisle you’re on, lighten up folks! Nobody gets out alive anyhow…

It’s interesting, John Hancock signing the Declaration large enough for King George to read it without glasses was more important in school than discussing the contents of the Declaration and its meaning.

What does that say about our education? (We want entertainment.)

I’ve been around a while… actually a LONG while… but had no idea what hit dog hollers means so for those similarly unenlightened, this is what I came up with compliments of Google:

“A hit dog will holler” refers to the idea that people offended by a certain idea or statement will be the ones most likely to react defensively or even aggressively to it. In fact, in some cases, if someone makes an accusation, the individual who reacts most vehemently is likely the most guilty of said accusation. In other words, their reaction can be construed as an admission of guilt.

I’ve made references to time periods by saying who was President at a given time.

One replied by asking me who Nixon was.

I DVR all NFL games now so I can avoid seeing Rob Gronkowski making an idiot of himself representing one brand of insurance, or numerous others making idiots of themselves talking to “Jake” from another insurance company.

John Hancock meaning a signature is out of style since they no longer teach cursive in schools. You can just sign things electronically or print it. Pass the crayons.

Possibly because those of the “woke” persuasion consider that he was a rich white man, and therefore, like Geo. Washington, Thos. Jefferson, et al, he should be forgotten/minimized as to his role in the founding of America.
