Chuck seems a little young for Ballard Street.

You can have both of Chuck’s thoughts for the same price.

(You can see why MY thoughts would have to be free…. not worth a plugged nickel.)

(For you youngsters, a nickel is a five cent US coin… which, amazingly, was once considered worth something.)

There are no interested parties… Chuck is not amused… Poor Chuck – Fireman, send Chuck over a pitcher of beer, and put it on my tab.

I’m not sure of my long term memory any more, but I think the movie theater was about 25 cents and most candy was a penny (especially the silly fun things we kids liked (the little paper strips with candy dots, wax lips and bottles and candy cigarettes). The last (I know) is not PC – but I never AM!

Veteran GoComics PRO Member said, about 14 hours ago @LadyKat I remember collecting pop bottles, taking them to the local convenience store (you remember the old ones) getting 50 cents maybe and coming out with a small bag of candy. Jaw Breakers, LemonHeads, Tootsie rolls, Good and Plenty, Candy necklace. A quarter went along way back then. Who can forget the Saturday Matinee at the movie house……all those cartoons, movie shorts, adventure shorts. I remember my mom would give a WHOLE dollar and send me off with my friends to the matinee. Cartoons, Good and Plenty, a Coke (the real kind).Of course that was to keep our minds off the Soviet Union nuking us at any minute. But in the words of Alfred E Newman…..WHAT?? Me worry?

OMG! OMG! AM I REALLY THAT OLD? YES, I GUESS I AM, BECAUSE I REMEMBER IT ALL! Funny that, don’t feel a day over 30, MOST days! LOL!

When I was a kid the grocery store had a fenced-in area out back where they kept the returned bottles. My friend would climb the fence and throw the bottles to me, then we’d cash them in at the store. Then we’d spend the afternoon at the movies.

When I was between 7 and 10, a local movie theater had a Saturday matinee for children….

10¢ for a ticket…. but they added a penny to a nickel candy bar, and 2¢ to a 10¢ one….Using my new-found arithmetic skills, I calculated that most of the the latter were NOT twice as big as the 1 ounce nickel bars… only an ounce and a half…

We got 25¢ a week allowance…. so we’d walk to the theater to save the nickel bus fare, and have enough for a ticket and TWO 6 cent candy bars… and 3 of the penny suckers or Tootsie Rolls, too!

One Saturday we noticed that the walk led past a Fanny Farmer chocolate shop…. not the sort of place we were supposed to go on our own….

but we did…A good, 2 oz chocolate bar for 10¢…. plus our movie ticket….and we each had five whole cents left over to spend at Woolworth’s on our way home!
