I love Elvis’ dead-serious face as he declares that Puck “looks DARLING”. It’s good to have an objective, authoritative assessment of this terribly dire situation.
I’m lucky, since one of my cats lets you bathe him with very little fuss. He doesn’t like it, but he lets you. I gave him a bath the day after I took him home from the vacant lot (he was filthy after living outside for at least a month), and I could not believe that after a little squirming, he just calmed down and let me.
And (unfortunately) he needs it sometimes. He’s a fat boy. They have trouble reaching.
I wouldn’t even TRY to give his stepsister a bath. She’d kill me.
I have fostered countless cats and kittens. The “purrito” is a really effective way to safely deal with tasks that the feline dislikes. Baths, shots, nail trims. And a warm wet washcloth to the butt is the best substitute to a mom cat’s tongue for cleaning kittens. Kittens must be stimulated to poop when they are at the newborn stage.
The truly sad thing about this whole situation is that it could so easily been avoided if only the People had eaten their syrup slathered pancakes standing up. But nooooo they wanted to sit at the table.
Poor Puck. Poor Woman. Poor Man! I’m having flashbacks to a poor cat who somehow got a back paw (and part of his tail) caked in clumping kitty litter. Got the cat into the bathroom and then made a sink full of warm water and then the kitty started wailing. I just picked him up, had him “stand” with his back legs in the warm water (no splashing no added water). He stood with his front paws on my shoulder as I held him and WAILED. The soaking was enough to get the litter to release and pretty much “fall off”. at some point he was like "hey, this warm water is kinda nice… I can stand here with my front paws on the sink edge while my back end gets worked on… kinda like spa day! " He stopped wailing and I got to massage his toes to de-clump them and got his tail to soak — he did NOT like that but suffered the indignity of having a rat tail. We were both wet and relieved when it was over. In over 30 years of cats and clumping litter – that was the only time a cat had a problem. :(
Years ago I was cleaning paint brushes when my cat of the time walked across the work bench and stepped in the pan of Varsol. I rushed her into the bathroom to wash it off, then called the veterinary emergency help line while she kept up an ear splitting chorus of complaints in the background.
“Hello? (YOWL! YOWL! YOWL!) My cat just stepped in Varsol. I washed it off with dish soap, is there anything else that needs to be done?” (YOWL! YOWL! YOWL!)
“It sounds like you’ve done the right thing. (YOWL! YOWL! YOWL!) Take her to your vet clinic if she hasn’t calmed down after an hour or so.” (YOWL! YOWL! YOWL!)
I could barely hear the person on the other end of the line.
I was making some wine, and it was at the yeast growth ~ still loaded with sugars ~ stage. It was in an only use garbage pail, covered with a cloth to keep bugs out. Our Maine Coon got startled and jumped for the wine bucket, promptly going in. And going out. And running through the house. We got her in our laundry tub, and stood on the bottom, holding to the top. She rather gracefully let us hose her off and dry her.
Then we cleaned off walls, floors, and ceilings. I threw in sulfite to stop the ferment, and a few days later, got it started again. I figured if it didn’t work, it goes down the drain. It did, and I had 10 gallons of a very nice cranberry wine.
Today is World Math Day. In its honor, we will have a short quiz. Take out your pencils and solve the following, although the answer is fairly obvious to the cogno scienti, illuminatii , and the great body of the students of BCN:
(Oh drat! Apparently I cannot paste the equation because it’s considered a graphic. I will attempt to describe it in English)
dirivative x, the limit from n=1 to n=∞ of BCN = z, solve for z.
The answer will be posted tomorrow. Partial credit will be given.
When Vlad (black/white) was a baby, and didn’t quite clean right, I would get the washcloth and use it. He didn’t act like I was doing anything bad, after all, “ma ma” was teaching him how to not miss. :-)
I went to the grocery store this afternoon. I took a trip down the Easter candy aisle hoping to find some of the Russell Stover coconut nests. Didn’t find those, but I did discover that there is a new flavor of Peeps—Pancakes and Syrup. No, it isn’t April 1, and I’m not kidding!
I like how the Woman is soothing Puck – Much like a first-responder would blanket and comfort a rescuee after a traumatic incident (I guess syrup CAN induce that)!! … Who knew??!! :)
When Marlowe needed a bath, which fortunately was rare, I’d use the bathroom sink, thinking less water would not be so frightening and the people would not have to be on their knees, ouch. Rod would gear up with a long flannel shirt and work gloves; he was the holder. I would strip down to whatever could stand getting soaked; I was the washer. It was hard to believe there was that much muscle power in a wiggling, squirming 15 lb, overweight cat. He’d grab at the faucet, turn the handles, water on, water off, water too hot! We usually all survived with minimum damage, but it was a major struggle. Then, once I had to bathe Marlowe all by myself, yikes! Astonishingly, he sat in the sink while I soaped and rinsed him. Oh, he yowled …. and yowled. And when we were finished, he’d tolerate a rub down with a big fluffy towel, then move himself to the middle of the bed where he would alternately glare at me and lick. From then on, I did the bathing myself and remembered to put another big fluffy towel on the bed,
O.T. regarding Bush’s Baked Beans references from last week—I had forgotten this until we passed the interstate exit coming home from Knoxville this afternoon, but there is a Bush’s Visitors Center near Pigeon Forge. You can learn all about how the beans are made, and they have a Cafe where you can sample things like Pinto Bean Pie. I think we’ll stop there next time we travel in that direction.
I had a cat, Asia, who loved to sit on the side of my tub as I bathed (no shower). She would let her tail down into the water, where it would, at first float. She would sometimes pull it out, then lower it back. This would continue until it became very wet, and sank into the water, at which point she would jerk it out and proceed to groom it.
I had a farm cat by name of Batu who fell into a vat of motor oil a neighbor had close to our property. I knew the poor fellow felt bad when he didn’t try to shred me while I bathed him.

And a cat wrapped in a towel
What happens we are sure we know
A bath is coming now.
Elvis and Lupin both know,
They’ve been there a time or two,
All Puck wanted was a bacon slice,
That’s what he wanted to do!
…….
You are the bacon slice,
I wish I didn’t steal,
There’s syrup on my tail,
I don’t like how that feels!
…….
We love bacon, why don’t the cats get pieces too?
If it’s on the plate, don’t you know what cats will do?
…….
(Meow, Me-ee-ow, Me-ee-ow)
(Meow, Me-ee-ow, Me-ee-ow)
Walk on, now endure the bath
And refuse to show regret,
Bacon’s always worth the price,
Even if it means get wet!
Dried off with a nice soft towel,
Maybe this is not so bad!
We’ll see how it goes next time,
When there’s ham slice to be had!
…….
