Poor little boy, of Course Santa is still coming! Then Elvis breaks up some of the pain with a suggestion that Santa bring primer. Skillful story telling, Georgia.
Last night before bed my nephew showed me that one of his teeth fell out. He made sure I knew it was wrapped up in tissue by his bed and asked if the tooth fairy would give him more than usual since it’s Christmas time. I decided the tooth fairy can’t trespass in Santa’s domain. Union rules.
There’s the reassuring Mommy we were hoping for yesterday! Great rainbow, wrong place. We have green paw-printed proof that the Adult People are allowed to paint the walls in the conventional sense, so Santa’s primer would probably be helpful. I wonder if the Woman’s comment is remembering a childhood mural of her own.
(Here is where I’m going to be sat in the corner being told how much coal I’m getting…)
In most locations… I like to give quotes. So here is a few to ponder.
“Hell is paved with good intentions.”― Samuel Johnson, The Life of Samuel Johnson LL.D. Vol 2
“But remember that good intentions pave many roads. Not all of them lead to hell.”― Neal Shusterman, Scythe
“The road to powerful magical items is paved with good intentions and hideous deathtraps.”― Jeff Mach, There and NEVER, EVER BACK AGAIN: A Dark Lord’s Diary:
Personally… I would leave the wall alone and worry about the paint job to just before the full move away from the place. But what do I know… I still love rainbows! :)
Since the wall’s already messed up anyway, the second panel makes me think The Woman (and maybe everyone) will join in and add their paintings to make the Boy feel better.
OT. My wife (Chief Slave) was talking to a friend who does Tarot readings. The friend said that, just for fun, she did a reading for her daughter’s cat. “And the first card that came up,” said the friend, sounding astonished, “was the card for Authority!”
“Well, duuuh!*”, said my wife.
I’m sure everyone here will share that response.
(*Actually the Japanese equivalent. Friend is Japanese as well.)
All of the suggestions are great about easels and so on but children forget or get carried away in the moment. That idea seems so good. The only solution that I see is time and love.
I love Elvis’s no-nonsense, pragmatic approach to the crisis.
How often do landlords check apartments in the US? If it is not a wall with a specific coating, plaster, etc., leave the rainbow on until after Christmas dear Dunn family, and then apply Santa’s gift of primer. Should do the job and allows you to keep your deposit.
Take a really good picture of the rainbow, and frame it. Then paint the boy can help bury the rainbow under primer like it’s a treasure. Famous artists do paintovers!
This reminds me of the time I spent Christmas Eve bunking in my niece’s room when she was about 7 years old. Just as I was about to drop off to sleep, she suddenly jumped out of bed and ran to the window. “He’s out there!” she said. “I heard him! I heard jingling.” Grumpily I told her to back to bed. “You know Santa won’t come if he sees you watching. And he can’t wait around all night because he has too many other houses to visit.” A couple of minutes later I’m hearing muffled little sobs from under the covers because she TRULY believes she heard bells. “I ruined it!” she wailed. “Now he won’t stop.” So now I have to get up and explain that he’s just going to go to the neighbors first, but he will stop back and check again before going on to the next town. “But he can’t keep doing that all night, so go to sleep fast!”
Thank goodness Santa backed me up by coming through!
This reminds me of when I burned a hole in my carpet and looked in the phone book and found a carpet repairman. When I explained we didn’t want the landlord to know, he said not to worry. He drove an unmarked car because he gets these calls from tenants all the time!!!
First Asteroid Day: First asteroid discovered by astrophotography, 1891. However, this rock did not have our name on it. It was named 323 Brucia.
First Electric Tree Day: First Christmas tree decorated with electric lights, 1882, by Edward H. Johnson, associate of Thomas Edison and VP of Edison Electric Light Co., one of the brains of the outfit.
National Cookie Exchange Day: Computers do it all the time, why shouldn’t we? Still, perhaps virtual cookies would be best this year. Which leads me to a question: When a computer tosses its cookies, where do they go? Who cleans up the horkage?
National Date and Nut Bread Day: Have you ever dated a nut? What was bread of this relationship? You’d be nuts to tell us.
Cows of Holly Day: The diabolical Lady Mondegreen strikes again! If you are decking your halls, leave the cows at the door, or it won’t be holly your halls are bedecked with—though that is not inappropriate for a “year of straight up poop.”
When I was a kid, my dad built a toy box for me. He used chalkboard to make the side panels and painted the lid with chalkboard paint. Do they make chalkboard paint in colors other than green or black? Maybe they could paint over the wall with chalkboard paint and get the budding artist a big box of colored chalk!
Well Boy, paint is better that what my brother did about 68 years ago. We shared a bedroom with bunk beds, him on top and me on bottom. Parents decided to redo the room with paint and new wallpaper and rearranged the furniture. So we went to a holiday party that was crowded enough that no one was watching us kids too closely so we got to eat and drink more than was a good idea. I was ok but in the middle of the night my brother got really sick and, forgetting in the dire moment that the beds were now opposite their old position, leaned over the wrong side of the bed and threw up curdled peppermint ice cream punch down the new wallpaper. Spattered me and my bedding too, so Mom and Dad came running in to find a sick little boy, an hysterical little girl, and a big mess down the wall and all over the bed. Merry Christmas all.
When I was a baby left in my crib for awhile and possibly feeling bored, I discovered useful material at hand in my diaper and proceded to “finger paint” a large swath of the wall next to my crib. This story was told throughout my lift by my mother who was pretty horrified at the time but who did appreciate my creative impulse.
Maybe you’re doing Elf on the Shelf. Santa might not know about the rainbow if your doing Elf on the Shelf. Now if you do Santa on the tree, forget it. He already knows.
As we all suspected, this is based on a true story from a few years ago. Here’s what Georgia wrote: "Folks have asked all week if this BCN storyline happened in real life. Yes, it did! And today’s the day, four years ago. In real life, I kept my acrylic paints in a drawer next to our bed. I stored them fast in a move, and as I don’t use them as often as my watercolors, they were forgotten until the Boy discovered them during nap time. A few days before Christmas, and being only three years old, he decided to try and make a rainbow as a surprise… At the time, my face was very much as it was yesterday—but when he explained his intentions in a crumpling voice “I tried to make a rainbow… it was hard”, it just was the saddest, sweetest thing. It was a tough week that year of many little accidents, spills, and misunderstandings of the age. During one the next day, is when he fretfully cried out, “Santee is no coming, eh he” (And here I’ll stop explaining, so you can see the rest of the story play out this week…)Here are some photos of how we lived around it for a time, one of the Girl from back then, and one from two years ago sharing his quote. The photo of him standing proudly beside it is from the day we moved out of our apartment, when it had become a treasured piece of art (we actually loved his color choices). We had a terrific property manager and handy man at that place who were each parents too and both incredibly understanding. When we fessed up and asked what color paint we could buy to repair the wall, they told us not to worry about it, that they had needed to repaint the walls anyway. So, so nice of them!
When I was three or four, my best friend and I painted the walls of our apartment complex. I have no memory of this myself but there is photographic evidence of us cleaning our mess. My mother says we were in so much trouble but we look pretty happy in the pictures. Maybe one day the boy will remember his rainbow with joy and forget about these worries.

Bless the cats and the artists,
For sometimes when they’re doing good,
They’re misunderstood,
Bless the cats and the artists,
See what they want us to see,
How the world could be.

Understand, their beautiful creation,
Is their gift, despite the location!
……..
Bless the cats and the artists,
Give them paper and crayons
Let their art do no harm!
