We also keep a battery charger for the phones and I have my scanner radio on my phone so we can pick up the local police channels. I used to have a NOAA weather alert radio and it was terrible! You had to test it every week or the alarm would go off, usually in the middle of the night or when we weren’t home, if I forgot, and the poor animals would just freak because it was so loud! I ended up getting rid of that in a hurry. Awful thing.

It’s always a good idea to check the emergency kit every year. Don’t forget food and water for three days for the pets, plus any meds they need.

We should check ours. We put ours together for two people and three cats. The thing is, we now have three people.

In Florida, Texas, etc., we need the same checklist for anything that could affect power, such as an itty-bitty hurricane. I keep candlesticks and small mirrors with the candles, and a small Sterno™ stove to use outside. I’d add a manual can opener, watch or battery clock, and powdered drink mix to the group’s list.

From the last week-long power outage these steps were added to my check-list- Fill tub with water for toilets and another container with drinking water (well water)- Firewood in the garage so it stays dry- Coffee already ground and a verified way to heat water without electricity

Try living here in Nevada, Elvis. I dunno about the the rest of the state, but I can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve actually seen snow in Vegas. We did get some nice rain last month, though!

It doesn’t have to be snow. It could be a violent thunderstorm that takes down power lines. It is always a good idea to have a few supplies on hand for emergencies. We have a generator for the house and enough gas to keep it running for several days, more if we don’t have too much load on the system.

    You’re gonna need some light

You’ll be glad you bought some candles

    Elvis is so uptight

You know snow’s more than he can handle

Might be snow or even slipp’ry sleet

So you better find a broom

    With winter things complete

Snuggle close in your warmest room

Well you could’ve done anything that you wanted to

    We can see

It’s all the winter things you do

“Pinky” really likes the things you do

Procol Harum: A Whiter Shade of Pale

We checked the drawers for batteries

And did the candles have a match?

    The radio reported the weather,

A snowstorm coming in a flash!

The Woman said first and foremost,

We must make a shopping list,

To beat the crowds that will be rushing,

You know we have to get there first!

    …….

And so it was with Puck and Elvis

    As Lupin told his tale

That the Meeser, first just angry

Puffed out to a grander scale!

    …….

They said they need milk and eggs

The fridge they had to fill

There had to be enough groceries

    To last until next April!

The snow arrived, the flakes came down

Covering the ground for all to see,

At the end the alleged snow storm

Yielded two inches, or maybe three!

    …….

And so it was with Puck and Elvis

    As Lupin told his tale

That the Meeser, first just angry

Puffed out to a grander scale!

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

Thomios: Do we have enough fruit and juice for my fruit fiesta dessert?

Sue Chef: I’ll check, but I’m pretty sure we do. I just heard giggling in the background.

Thomios: Great. I’ll have enough for the Artisans’ Wearable Art Fashion Show.

    At the Artisans’ Studio

Maat-Tilda: We’ll have to rethink the fashion show a bit now that Lupinium’s gone all multicolored.

Sophititi: How about Gold and Silver for Puck, and Jewel Tones for Lupinium.

Tillie: Wonderful idea. Tabith-Isis, do you have any red dots we can use?

Tabby: I can catch some, no problem.

Soph: And Arachna, can you weave some fine silver silk?

Ari: Do you think I’m made of silk? But sure, I can do that.

Tillie: I think we have a plan.

Geez Elvis, take a chill pill dude. All of our cats have always been indoor cats, however each and every one of them gets one opportunity to explore the great outdoors. This chance only comes in the winter, when there is snow on the ground. It is priceless to watch a cat when it first encounters snow. It also helps to curb that drive to go outside.

Candles? Check. BBQ lighter for candles and gas stove? Check. Food? Check. Water? Not on a well, so should be OK. Toilet paper? Check and double check? Cats? Both still here, check. Cat food and treats? Getting low on food, lots of treats. Blankets and warm clothing? Check. I think I’m good.

That’s what winter does, Elvis. If it’s winter, it snows. You can’t have one without the other.

Unless you live closer to the equator where it’s too warm to snow…but I would argue that doesn’t count as “winter.” You cannot have winter without snow, I’m sorry, folks. I don’t make the rules, I just tell them like it is. :P

I would totally freak out in a power failure. I’ve lived in the same condo complex in Chicago for over 25 years and we have never had a power failure. I would be totally unprepared and helpless. I had some old matches and a candle, and for some reason, I tried to light a match a year or two ago, and the matches were so old, they just crumbled.

I used to live in Texas (hated it!!!) and lived through power failures all the time, mostly in extremely hot or otherwise horrible weather.

Why do people, and cats, say “hot cocoa?” One of my sous chef duties when I was a kid was stirring the cocoa while it heated. My mom had me do things like cream butter and sugar and stir stuff. It wasn’t till I grew up that I realized that she was offloading the time consuming tasks.

Facebook post from Georgia “Many folks have asked this week if Lupin was ever really pink. Yes and no… Was he ever specifically pink? No. Was he sometimes other colors? Yes. Back in 2013, Lupin was yellow for a few weeks after getting into some daffodils. (We were lucky he did not try to eat them, only rubbed his face into them and batted them with his paws. We’ve been careful of what followers come in since.) He was also sometimes gray, because he loved to get into the fireplace and try to sleep in the ashes. Longtime readers may remember the second photo. My sister The Intruder sent it while she was babysitting the kids and the cats, after turning around and unexpectedly finding Lupin in the fireplace.”
