I think a rational parent would just let the kid find out. But Darwin has shown us that irrational parents’ progeny are more likely to survive long enough to procreate.
Got two broken vertebrae (compression fractures) and two to three ruptured disks from imitating the Olympics. Now, 45 years later, I have the degenerating disks to prove it. Mine involved a ski jump, a tow rope and a snowmobile…
Calvin does inexplicably survive to adulthood whereby upon his eventual demise his headstone reads “Hold my beer, I got this”. I miss seeing what fresh new adventures Calvin would embark on. Watterson retired way too early.
Yet, over the decades, every so often we read about the kid who got on the garage roof with a blanket made into a cape who jumps off to fly like his superhero. For some reason have not seen a story about a girl doing the same despite the increase of female heroines.
Maybe there is a gender difference in accomplishments and a willingness to experiment and try. Or guys want to be the first and have to crack a few eggs or skulls to make that omelette.
Godspeed brave little soldier. Nail that double backflip with a twist!
It is our loss that Bill retired, however, coming up with a fresh and awesome cartoon every day is a lot of work! It has been said that he still draws C&H cartoons, but doesn’t share them. I’m just grateful for the great gift Bill Watterson left us. I have the three-volume set. By the time I get back to the beginning, it’s all new again.
Wait, how is Hobbes real if Calvin’s mom is looking at Calvin? Did Bill Watterson not realize, or is it just one of those rare Calvin and Hobbes strips?
