Hobbes outmaneuvered Cal. If he says nothing, Cal, the intemperate, have nothing to do. He very likely will get bored and move on to some other annoyance.
My mom’s good friend had a rather unpleasant son about ten years younger than I. When he started pulling that routine one day, I taught myself to recite Theodore Roosevelt’s entire “Man in the Arena” speech in about ten seconds. That put a stop to it.
I love the strips where Calvin repeats what others say! Probably because when I was younger I went through a phrase where I’d do that with my little brother when he’d say something annoying.

The parents should be happy that Calvin directs so much of his annoying behavior toward Hobbes.

It works even better when you do the echo in a baby voice.

Remember the time Calvin was doing that till his Dad said “I forfeit my desserts for a week.” “OK. Give them to me.”

You’re lucky that Hobbes hasn’t taken a swipe at you, Calvin!

There are logical ways to deal with this… but they don’t work since logic isn’t involved.
Remember the one where you get the mark to kneel next to you and repeat after you as they touch their head to the carpet:
I know my heart (I know my heart)
I know my mind (I know my mind)
I know that I (I know that I)
Stick up behind (… um …)

“I know you are but what am I.” Seems like yesterday I was saying that. Yeah, it was yesterday when I was quizzing a TDS victim.

Hobbes should say stuff about Susie and smoochies.

Sometimes, Hobbes is a little TOO tolerant. If Calvin tried this with anyone else (especially his parents), he’d be soundly smacked!

I think any kid who had siblings was at some time or other on both sides of this gag. We’ve been victims and perps of it.

Just start reading “War and Peace” or “Moby Dick” or “The Brothers Karamazov” out loud. Calvin will stop his repeating soon enough!

Keep it up, Calvin, and you will regret it. I lost an “imaginary acquaintance” that way when I was five. :)
