I think you’re going to bed without dinner

I once told ChatGPT to write a script where Phoebe and Marigold from Phoebe and Her Unicorn reenact this comic, and it resulted in Phoebe getting caught by a police officer for indecent exposure.

Calvin has a point

Do you remember the Russian-American comedian, Yakov Smirnoff? I liked his line about this. “I saw a sign that said ‘No shoes, no shirt, no service.’ Just like in Russia! There you get no shoes, no shirt, and no service!”

They’ll see London, they’ll see France!

Pretty girls can get away with that.

Also, it doesn’t say that the shoes have to be on your feet.

At least change your underwear!!!!

I don’t see Hobbes wearing shoes or a shirt, so that could be an issue.

Calvin’s not ashamed about his mother seeing him without pants? He’s at the age when he ought to be.

I always wondered what they’d do if you walked in wearing one shoe.

That’s both “kid logic” and “kid pushing the boundaries” – good work, Calvin!

The fact that such signs exist is proof that our species is in trouble. The fact that there are people willing to test it only confirms this.

I wondered the same thing, when I was Calvin’s age.

Calvin definitely would have grown up and gone into a job favoring someone finding loopholes.

Ziggy will already be sitting there eating and Elmer Fudd is in the kitchen cooking.

Somebody is cruising for a spanking and a early bedtime!

What is acceptable for a women in a thong bikini is grotesque for a man in a speedo. Kids, they can get away with anything.

Trying to imagine Mom’s face when Calvin presents himself with no pants… “I’m ready to go for dinner !”

That’s not what the sign meant. It meant that it was not a clothing store (no shirt), not a shoe store (no shoes), and they didn’t offer any service.

Mom will make you put your pants back on.

I am sure the restaurant would not mind serving to a six year old with shirt and shoes accompanied by his parents. I have doubt whether parents will take him along.

I remember reading this strip as a kid and wanting to duplicate the experiment. I got as far as mentioning it to my parents, and that was the end of it. In real life, adventures like Calvin’s seem to get nipped in the bud.

This reminds of how some play tabletop rpgs :P

That’s Calvin’s true talent is in testing limits: patience, the law, etc,…

This is the reason so many safety statements on products sound so ridiculous, like “Do not insert felt-tip pen in ear canal.” You cannot rely on anyone using common sense to avoid doing what should be obvious.

I’ve had the same thought, but not the courage to try it.

I was behind a very elderly gentleman and his caregiver, waiting to be seated in a restaurant, when his pants fell down. Respecting his age and infirmity, nobody said anything while the caregiver pulled them back up. Fortunately, he was wearing underwear. I think we all thought: that could be me someday.

Dad: I thought you said having kids would be fun!

Mom: I said making kids would be fun!

No shirt, no shoes, no dice…

I just love Hobbes’ observations, including this one.

I think the reason that exists is because public decency laws mean you can walk around in the streets without a shirt or shoes, so in theory as long as you had pants on you can go wherever you want, but if you tried to leave your home without pants you’d never actually get to a restaurant before you were stopped.

We’ve all pondered that question. But Calvin is the first to stoop and try it.

He should hang out with Ziggy. He’s gone pants-less for years, and doesn’t seem to have any problems being served in restaurants.

Once again, Hobbes has a point.

Go ahead, Calvin. Try it. I wanna be there when you test “No shoes/shirt” without pants—to see the reactions of others.
