I’m a woman, and I once held open a store-door for a man who had his hands full holding his baby. He smiled and said thanks. I told him chivalry wasn’t dead, it just changes hands now and then.

It cuts both ways. A woman who treats a man with courtesy and respect is also going to improve both their lives. For that matter, that goes for anybody who does that for anybody.

Holding a door or a chair for a woman no more implies she cannot do the same for herself than buying her a gift implies she can’t be a breadwinner and buy it herself. It is a show of respect for and interest in someone, nothing more or less. But in that spirit, I expect Crystal to hold a door for Knute by the end of this arc (and I don’t think Knute’s masculinity will be hurt by accepting).

i must be missing something obvious: Why is Knute apologizing? For looking down at her bottom? That’s what I’d have done, but I wouldn’t have apologized. In high school, though, I might have blushed.

No ambition? Knute’s ambition is to be a cartoonist. We don’t see how much work he puts into training himslef for that.
