Stupidity!! It ranks up there with “You need to have experience before we can hire you” told to high school graduates when they come looking for a job; like they teach that kind of experience in school.

I started programming computers in 1968 and began doing consulting (contract) work in the 80s. A few years ago I was trying to get work and was told I couldn’t because I had been between assignments for over a year. I know how Beardo feels because I am still facing that situation in real life.

What it really is is an excuse for non-thinking. If someone else hires a person then the second employer need not think, or run checks, before hiring. Just pure ol’ dee lazy on employers’ parts.

Artists get this conundrum also: how do you get space in a gallery unless you have a name, and how do you get a name without getting a show?

Story of my life… as a writer, a community college instructor, an editor, AND an artist. Hence why I’m doing all four part-time and/or freelance, and still making less than $20K per year (sometimes quite a bit less). Wheeeeee!
