Girl: Peanuts grow in the dirt. Cashews grow on trees. Cashews are more expensive than peanuts. So much for money not growing on trees. Frazz: Economics can get nutty.
Always wondered why cashews were so expensive…just found a youtube video about how they grow and are processed, and now I get it. That’s a lot of hand work! And , it appears, many women gainfully employed.
Just for fun, I found a video on pecan processing, and there is a lot less hand work involved. The cashew “fruit,” pictured in today’s first panel, is so fragile it can’t be picked by machine, so the whole process is done by hand from start to finish.
@shirins “I’m having trouble figuring out what the reddish blob in the first panel is…anyone know?”

The reddish blob is the “fruit,” AKA the “cashew apple,” each of which has one cashew attached to the bottom. One of today’s earlier posts erroneously identified the blob as the blossom, so you might have been confused by just reading all the posts. The cashew flowers are really tiny.

And cashew apples are prized for their juice, but are so fragile that they cannot be transported. I’d love to try them someday.

You get just the one cashew attached to the fruit. They’re not half as plentiful as peanuts or pecans.

I think I’m one of few that doesn’t care much for cashews.

Money is made of paper; paper grows on trees. Ergo, money grows on trees..(Actually, it’s printed on linen; so it really grows on a flax plant.)

Apparently you can get the juice of the cashew apple in some South American restaurants here in the States. It sounds really tasty…

Think about the person that decided they would try a lobster.

The shell of the cashew is toxic so they must be shelled prior to roasting & eating, unlike peanuts.

This is why I read the comments. I almost always get my questions answered by the many smart people here. What one doesn’t know, someone else does.
