Regarding that thing on the blog about the ruinous effect of cats on wildlife, I solve that problem by simply not letting my cat go outside without him being in a harness and on a leash.

This carries the added benefit of me never having to worry that he’ll get lost or killed, because I’m always there to supervise his excursions.

Hey! Synchronicity! Happyathome’s nick and avatar are very appropriate for today’s cat discussion. Mine stays indoors at all times.

Heinz still makes “Spotted Dick Sponge Pudding” in England but you can still find it in a few select places in Chicago.

I’ve always been conflicted about letting cats out, because there are so many factors. It shortens their lifespan (at least statistically – two of ours made it to 13, and one was out all the time, both in the USA and Switzerland, and the other was terrified to set foot outside), there are issues with neighbors, and there’s the issue that they are dealing with in New Zealand about wildlife predation as well. But if you’ve ever watched a cat playing outside and stalking and hunting, which is what their genes demand that they do, I wonder about inherent quality of life of cats kept indoors. It may be a cushy life, but is it a fulfilling one? I really don’t have the answers, so I let my cats out (if they want to go) and hope for the best.

Spending a lot of time on a farm I get to observe the activities of outdoor cats quite a bit. It is the absolute truth that keeping them indoors extends their lives. They are natural hunters and even when they are a couple of months old, they begin to hone those skills. The older females are always bringing them small live rodents to practice on. I could probably write a book on the subject of feral cats.

I warned everybody that Vlad doesn’t winter very well, but would anyone listen? Nooo…and now look what’s happened…. 2 killed and 6 maimed since Jan. 1st. Even Vlad’s picture has gotten smaller as if he is trying to hide from the authorities.

And another thing from the blog. I used to walk by a house that was the same sunny yellow color everyday going to and from school and I noticed the hue seemed to suit every season nicely. In the winter (as shown) it offsets the white surroundings in visually pleasing sort of way, in spring and summer blends in with the greenery same as the autumn when the trees change color.

The “gold” opal ring appears to be silver (other than inside plating).

I made my superman a cake with the Planet globe on the top and his figure circling the building for his 50th party. I don’t plan a visit for his 75th this July (I’d prefer to go there in May) and specific dates no longer matter.

I cleaned the door of my freezer today after putting away all the packets of new vegetarian foods. I found 2 different brands of uncured hot dogs and had 2 today (after pepperoni pizza yesterday).

The paintings of bunnies on chairs are cute; I have a friend who keeps a bunny. Have not visited her lately; we were mostly doing archery.

Cats inside or outside? The answer is easy, of course: don’t take a cat. Take a rabbit. Then say goodbye to your chairs.
