It is cruel of HIM to stand there and wait until she in her fervent search for her lost pencil happens to walk by, instead of calling out to her and giving it on his own. It’s like people who find someone’s purse and keep it unless that person asks THEM if they have found it.
Maybe he knows there’s a strong chance that she’d be walking past where he’s standing… like her routine to walk past where he is…. his BEST shot to FINALLY crack the ice…
And I know that some people let their greed rule and don’t say anything so that they can keep something that someone else may be feeling down about losing, But sometimes, it’s good to wait to make sure of the RIGHT owner….there were times that I found something, and I tried to make sure to find out who TRULY lost something… checking to see if the lost item has specific identifying marks…. seeing someone looking is one way to know for sure… cuz I’m almost sure of the answer if I asked everybody in the world…."Say….did you lose five dollars?’….
Hey, he doesn’t want the pencil… He wants to meet HER, and the pencil is the tool that will provide that opportunity. People who find purses don’t stand with the purse until that person walks by so they can give it back. It’s just a pencil for heaven’s sake… It IS cruel for Lucy to take that opportunity away from him!
Sometimes, that Lucy’s no good at math…. if she put 2 and 2 together, she could SEE the underlying reason for his plan… what some call love and intrigue, she calls dumb… unless it was Schroeder that they were talkin’ about….
Charles Schulz must have been terribly hurt by some thoughtless young thing in his life, for him to create the character Lucy so very cruel to Charlie Brown! It is “just a comic strip,” but it still makes my heart ache for Charles/Charlie.
