Actually, we ‘Brits’ are far more interested in foreign culture than most Americans: most of us have passports, and most have travelled to another country. How many Americans can say that?
When travelling to another country can be a day trip, that is easy to say. There are people In the US that can drive 700mi to the north or south or 1500mi east or west and still be in the same country. There are US states bigger than most countries.
Today I am boned to the stone. I think I am on my way to revovery. I am getting my meds to build up in my system and things look a little brighter. But, it’s a good thing my doctor said I couldn’t drive. My car would be the new :Red Rascal."
Star footballer Paul Gascoigne, a man whose brains were firmly fixed in his feet (as with most pro footballers), took a multi-million pound transfer leading him from Newcastle (same hometown as Andy Capp) to a top club in Rome. Italians take their football seriously; but unlike British fans, Italian fans of the beautiful game can also be equally passionate about the arts, opera, politics, et c. Gascoigne, a man whose command of English was suspect, was asked if he planned ti learn any Italian, and then the killer question was how much he knew about Pavarotti, Verdi, Burloscioni, et c. He scratched his head. “I dunno” said the genius. “What teams do they play for?”
@MikeyjVery nice! Were you influenced in this case by any specific Mad artist? I think I detect some Norman Mingo in there. (I’d love to see an Andy fold-in!)@Number SixWe’re waiting with much anticipation for both your Don Martin Andy and your next installment of the Mad Capps!@route66paulI’m smack in the middle of the U.S. (in Kansas City), and I have actually travelled about 1500 miles east (but never west farther than the middle of Kansas…..) There’s more difference between regions in America in some cases than between some countries in Europe. (Which are, unfortunately, being McDonald-ized, Wal-mart-ized, and Disneyfied………which can rightly be blamed on us!)
Humourwise, sure. Style-wise, don’t you see the exaggeration of features?…it is ‘Gary Larson’ a Cartoonist One [you] could do a tribute’ Capp of? I was thinking that about 2 hours ago.Wil Eisner, Milt Caniff; Al Capp, Ed Roth . . . those would be good ‘easy’ examples.re Mad: “Norman Mingo?” have to check that name out then.
I have a fairly large collection of old Mads (although the last ten years or so really haven’t seemed to be worth collecting………) I have quite a few scattered Crackeds, also. Usually, when Mad and Cracked both did a satire of the same movie or the same TV show, Mad’s version was better, but not always. My favorite part of Cracked was always the “Shut Up” sequences that ran in the back of the issue.
