Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for April 17, 2013
April 16, 2013
April 18, 2013
Transcript:
Dakota: You're trying out for the LEAD? Shun. You know why I'M gonna get that? 'Cause leading ladies never have dark hair. Phoebe: Ladybugs don't even have hair. Dakota: It's symbolic hair, dummy.
As to the other matter, Claudia Christian, Mira Furlan, Sutton Foster, Stana Katic, the Deschanel sisters, Diana Rigg, and plenty of other Amazingly Cool leading ladies have dark hair.
Maybe Marigold can turn them in to real bugs and see who learns the most about being a bug to get the part? I still think there should be some kind of hair related play for Dakota. Or some kind of clear good vs evil, light vs dark thing. I still don’t see Dakota as pure evil, just a bit of a pain. I like to see her get what’s coming to her but not in a way that crushes her compleetly.
Phoebe is aiming too high again. That always leads to disappointment. Whatever goon took the lollipop is the part to try for. No one likes the villains, but they usually get a lot of lines and are always fun to play.
Just a note to remind you (or, if you don’t look at the “sketches” link often, to tell you) that there will be a showing of “The Last Unicorn” at the Castro theater in San Francisco. In attendance will be Peter S. Beagle and Dana Simpson Her Very Self. Tickets are still available, and can be had at thelastunicorn.com, either alone ($8.50) or with admission to the after-showing party (it’s Peter’s birthday, and pretty close to Dana’s, too) at the Cartoon Art Museum, a more than worthy cause. I’ll be there – hope some of you will, too!
I’m beginning to think that this is a comic that should be read once-a-week instead of daily: it is consistently late showing up so reading a week’s worth at once would avoid that problem.
C. S. Lewis agrees about the good servant in “Lear”, but Gloucester, Lear’s friend who gets his eyes gouged out on stage, is more or less my signature role.
DANA: could you please advise us what time HN is meant to be updated every day? Put differently: at what time should we know something is amiss and notify GoComics? As you can read above, the constant tardiness is a major drag for many of us, and so out-of-step with the great American tradition of waking up to your favorite strips.
Directors may prefer blondes, but writers prefer brunettes.. My Favorite Bru, Tosca, Carmen, Beatrice, Lady ump te ump Blonde/Bru war Midsummer Night’s in Shakes, very few blonde in Dickens, …
Blonde vs Bru: ?what if Monroe had been cast Cleopatra instead of Liz Taylor? you’d lose the nobody messes with me, for the tragedy of exploited assets. .But Colbert would still trump those reactionaries with ‘I see what might happen, but I’m going to take the risk’.

What I WISH Phoebe had said:

Dakota reminds me of Tiffany of Luann fame for some reason. :-)

Watch. Dakota’s going to get a role, but one that’ll require her not to look like something out of Cosmopolitan.

I’m not sure Dana even comes here anymore. The constant sniping from ignoramuses must be wearing.
