Other students aside, Sunny knows he’s capable, but lazy. It’s a truism that the people who work with, or for, you know better than anyone else how good or bad you are.
I’d venture that Dexter has ADD (prob. not ADHD, as he’s always slumped around. Might even have a touch of Asperger’s). This stutt seems to run in my family.
“Actually there is no excuse for anyone to think all kids can get good grades. Everyone is different and relate to the world in different ways; current teaching methods do not accommodate this idea and teach to the median.”.Absolutely right; some kids are stupid; some are unmotivated. Some are determined to NOT learn.They should not have good grades.-But I don’t think current teaching methods teach to the median, more like they try to teach to the bottom quartile, fail and bore everybody in the process other than those who decide to learn anyway.-I saw my ninth grade science teacher a few weeks back. She was worried I was bored in her class some 44 years ago. I assured her I was not.-I was careful to not mention I was not bored because I was reading ahead in the text to learn the things she would never manage to cover while valiantly even if unsuccessfully trying to teach the borderline students. That and the fact I had a Louis L’Amour and an Edgar Rice Burroughs book to read as well.
As a teacher, I resent that last remark. I got a dyslexic student to a B grade for this year. The parents are so pleased, I’m scheduled for summer sessions, starting tomorrow.
I was not a very good student in high school. The math courses were a little too hard for me and I had a hard time trying to keep up. I was always too embarrassed to ask questions, so I was passed over. Special Ed. would have been a God send for me if they had it in my area in the 60’s.
There are a lot of teachers out there. Assuming that they’re all alike is a big fallacy. Some teachers are great, some are scary/mean, some just aren’t all that good at teaching.
In high school, I used to read for fun while the teacher was talking too, at least when the teacher was going over stuff I already understood. In college, I started doodling while the teacher was talking – with doodling, I didn’t get too distracted from what the teacher said.
