Did anyone really think that Luann would be doing ‘stuff’ with Quill while Frank and Nancy were downstairs?
I figured she was just messing with them a bit. Dumb move on her part, but still funny.

She should open the door ASAP and do damage control.

I found it amusing:) Nancy is looking pretty fine lately, and there are worse ways to die:)

Even though all they did was talk, I can’t believe how relatively calm Nancy is, if that were my (hypothetical) daughter, i’d be giving her 2 seconds to open the door, before smashing it in. I really wonder if F&N will believe that L&Q weren’t doing anything “wrong”?

Yes, agree. Does not make sense to lock the door “just to talk.”

I don’t know…. The two of them, stretched out horizontally on the bed, just talking for 20 minutes? Nancy is within her motherly rights to be angry; what will she do?

So, if all they were doing this time was lying in the bed talking, are we to believe now that the last time they were together lying on Luann’s bed before Quill left for Australia, that sex wasn’t on Luann’s agenda? What do you all think? Was sex with Quill never on Luann’s list of ‘things to do’ all this time?

Disrespect of your parents is wrong. Sois disobedience. Luann and Quillare wrong. Very. I can’t believe theyare blatantly disobeying/disrespectingFrank and Nancy. Good grief.
To shut the door was inappropriate:to lock it was worse. I don’t care If nothing sexual happened. This is striking at the very heartof their relationship.

As I said yesterday, this is not about what they were doing. It is about what they did. Luann locked that door, and Quill did nothing to correct it. There are going to be consequences for this they are not going to like.

Luann and Quill were NOT disrespectful…”^As you have stated, respect and trust is a two way street… but, it is NOT an entitlement…. Frank and Nancy are in the position of setting the house rules.and setting boundaries… and can give respect and trust, but so must she… Luann may not be a “bad girl”, but as any teen can do, she may not see beyond the immediate when it comes to her actions… she may try to TAKE more than what she’s given, and that’s no way to earn a parent’s trust, NOR their respect… and was she respectful, when last year, she purposely had Quill over, knowing what her parents would say if she were alone with a boy while they were away?==The same way as if we were to hide something we were doing from our spouses, even if there was nothing wrong going on… it undermines that trust and respect factor… it’s a “stigma” attatched to it… she had a BOY in her room with a locked door… unless we were throwing a surprise party, it will still lead to that outcome… so to sum up, the big hangup some of us are having here, is just that LOCKED door… they had privacy, without it… they were given the respect of space, WITHOUT needing to use it… that’s no way to develop trust, when you are a teen who depends on two adults……

Donny – you and many others seem to have forgotten who is writing this strip. Karen’s on the creative team, she did not replace Greg. And that’s the fact, Jack.
Miles VanDelay over 11 years ago
Geez, Lev, the answer is obvious – since at 16-18 sexual activity is to a large extent forbidden, Luann’s foray into those waters is a big deal, and Evans is chronicling it. For adults, it’s quite a bit less of a big deal, and Evans (or the Evans’) has/have chosen to focus on things like commitment and romance.
Miles VanDelay over 11 years ago
most people who like todays ‘music’ are clueless.

“if it is permissible to show 16-17-18 year old teens in bed, why can we not see a similar scene with full grown adults?”
I think we can see such a thing. But I think that the only persons for whom it would make any sense, at present, would be Brad and Toni.
Why, for example, would we need to see Frank and Nancy at this point? Their work is done! The only other adults in the Luanniverse are the faculty at Pitts HS, Ann Eiffel, Dirk (and he’s settled down now), the Capt. at the fire station, and (if you want to count her… why… I’d have no idea), Ms. Horner… although, you never know in those “assisted living” homes. ;-)
The other characters are all “under age,” so it would be “offensive,” per your definition above. The best we can do with them is see them as we do in the two strips you mentioned. Just “snogging” (to use the British term), as we have seen teen couples on TV since the ‘60s. If, OTOH, we see people actually “in bed” (i.e. “under covers”) and, perhaps, partially clothed, then yes, that’s a clear indicator.
For Brad/Toni, I think Greg is smart/subtle enough to not be that obvious. I think he can hint at things and leave them to the interpreter’s imagination. Thus, the controversial <forgive me folks ;-)>, “shower” strip of earlier this year. ;-))) It’s subtle enough that we can both interpret it differently and still be “within human reason.”

Luann locks her door to talk because her mom doesn’t knock before she comes in. I bet she locks her door when she is changing her clothes or in the bathroom. It is rude to barge in any closed door without knocking. I bet Brad locked his door when he lived at home. Do you think his mom barged in on him when he was alone? Probably not more than once after finding him pleasuring himself.

You: “11-06-96 thru 11-09-96”
Sorry – Waaaay before my time in the Luanniverse…. I started around 04/2008.
You: “If snogging can happen in a bed with the teens, it can happen in a bed with the adults.”
My point is, it doesn’t need to happen with the adults, since the adults can be much more “expressive” and yet not seem" offensive" in re: age of the characters. So why limit them to just “snogging” when one can insinuate so much more, subtlety? Only the teens are, truly, subject to that limitation. And the only adults for which I think it really matters presently (and for which PDAs might add value to the story now) are Brad & Toni.
I don’t think Brad/Toni need to be subject to a “snogging” limit. I think Greg can insinuate a whole lot more, while still maintaining sufficient decorum to allow under age readers to enjoy.
Gerry Lee over 11 years ago
Hi Leviticus. I believe that the issue of how physically intimate Brad and Toni are is purposely left to the readers imaginations. As today’s strip showed, even a whole lot of circumstantial evidence and compromising situations can turn out to be no proof at all that sex has actually occurred. With Brad and Toni being the age of ‘consenting adults’, it may be ‘normal’ for them to be having sex, but this is in no way proof as many also wait for marriage. If anything I would argue that her abusive relationship with Dirk probably contained a sexual element, but what do you do with that even if you accept it? I could say ‘So Toni is used to being sexually active and would probably sleep with Brad if he wanted to.’ You could argue, and rightly, that Toni probably wouldn’t want a repeat of the Dirk situation and has shown signs in the past of wanting to take the relationship very slowly, which would bolster your position.’ There is a lot of sexy talk in the strip, but that doesn’t tell us how far the couple is going. Like when Toni comes home after a date, she winsomely chirps ‘You got to play with Shannon so that I could play with Brad.’ For some, this means sex. For you, this probably just means the heavy kissing we’ve seen in the past. It’s to Mr. Evan’s advantage to keep the details of the relationship ambiguous. If they are having sex then they are ‘sinners’ or ‘normal’ and half the crowd is angry. If they abstain they are ‘good boys and girls’ or ‘Evans is out of touch with the realities of modern couples.’ and the other half is offended. By letting us read our own values into the relationship, he’s arranged it so everyone feels good about it.
Personally I like the idea that Brad respects and adores Toni in an old school gentlemanly fashion, and is giving her a chance to be chaste until their marriage, a chance she might have blown with Dirk to her regret. shrugs Can’t prove it, but I’ll read it that way:) Hope she’ll wear white at their wedding!

Leviticus, did GoComics say why they took down your fanfic? I enjoyed it, but other readers might have flagged it as spam since it wasn’t about today’s strip. (though most of the posts everyday don’t have a lot to do with the day’s strip sometimes:) Perhaps Nancy fans were offended at the idea of her as a sexual predator. I found the idea funny because it’s so absurd, and admittedly at the same time a little intriguing because I’m terrible and find the character design rather attractive. Anyways, write to the moderator and find out his/her thoughts:)

That’s even lamer than my suggestion that Quill be sleeping off his jet lag.

He is comfortable showing the kids not having sex. Seeing Brad and Toni in bed would affirm that they are, which he is less willing to have be part of his strip.

I think the idea was they intended to make out, but didn’t get around to it. Whatever. This is Toni redux to me. Her feelings went from “meh” to love in a blink without any hint of the in-between feelings. Character development is NOT one of Evans’ strong suits. Granted there were a lot of good reasons for her to fall for Brad, but we just never got a peek into her feelings until they were love. I find Quill’s “doting” to be very confusing, like they’re strangers, really. I’m not buying the feelings of either him or Luann.

Long as they don’t get sounded out together, like on THE Electric Company…. (XD)==Funny story, my wife and I were in a Best Buy, and the store “radio” gave their announcements, and then they went into the song “Absolutely (Story of a Girl)” by Nine Days… afterward, it was more store stuff, then back to a song…. “This is the story of a girl, who cried a river of tears and drowned the whole world…” then more store talk… then what was next? No, “This is the story of a girl…” etc.. we were still shopping and the WHOLE time we were in there, that song got played back to back to back to back to…. no kidding!!!! I said, “That ain’t gonna last”…. Guess what? for a coupla months, at least, and I blame that ingenious system at places like Best Buy… lol!!!
