That is the voice of MOM. I have it, my sisters have it and every woman I know who has a mom who laid down the rules and enforced them, has it. Sometimes it’s quiet for a long time and then you hear, “Sit up straight” or “it’s doesn’t, not don’t” (I get that one when hubby uses “don’t” inappropriately, which is all the time). I guess kids who grew up with parents that wanted to be their “friends”, don’t have that, but I wouldn’t give it up for the world.
i think it’s an editorial on how much time people spend on their devices, wasn;t it just last week she was “interfacing” with her neighbors live face to face. of course this from the guy who has one iPhone joke after another in the strip.
My father was much the same, although he was never my “official” boss. I once had a part-time job as “Night Porter” (Janitor) and one of my jobs was to strip and wax the office floors. After the very first time I did that job, the bosses were agog at how good the floors looked. They even called the “home office” to come look at them! I was scratching my head trying to figure out what all the hubbub was about. I just did it like they showed me. I finally came to the conclusion that, because of the work ethic instilled into me by my father, I didn’t even consider slacking on the work and not doing the job right.
…thankfully, my parents are both still with us physically, as well as being those “voices in my head…”They don’t use the old voices anywhere near as much as they used to – either they did their jobs well, and it’s not necessary anymore, or we were just too much for them, and they gave up in exhaustion (there are 9 of us)….
My daughter told me yesterday that over the weekend she used “Because I said so, that’s why!” and “Stop crying or I’ll give you a reason to cry.” Made me SO proud.
At least she had a touch-tone phone. Well into the 1980s (the strip began in 1985, obviously after Janis’ teen years), most American homes still had rotary phones.
An episode of Star Trek: the Next Generation featured Spock having a heated discussion with CAPT Picard about the former’s apparent defection to the Romulans. The two got into an heated discussion with Picard unknowingly echoing Sarek. Spock looked at Picard and said, “Curious, that I should hear him so clearly now that he is dead.”
My mother said something similar to me about her mother, who has been gone for over 30-years.
Note: I know which episode I’m referring to but I didn’t want to give a synopsis here.
My close friend always tells me when she doesn’t reply back to me for hours that “She is not tethered to the phone!” Funny, she seems to be when she is with me!! hahaha
I’ve always like A&J, but more strips than not, I think Jimmy Johnson has mental problems. And I’m not kidding… I think this strips days are numbered… until they discover the brain tumor…
olfart – you must have been raised on a farm. My father and husband both seem to respond to this term. My dad is gone but my son (33) and I both laugh when my husband is in a hurry to get going on a project. We both know how to respond because we respect(ed) their efforts and intent.

I still have the “Mom” voice in my head at certain times but it’s my aunt who raised me from three.
