Zen Pencils by Gavin Aung Than for September 30, 2013
Transcript:
The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practiving an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend... even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something. -Kurt Vonnegut

the first 2 lines sum it up nicely, the others are a fib to justify the existance of art schools

@Zen PencilsGavin-sama, how can I ever thank you? You have renewed every hope I had for becoming a literature professor!
Literature is my only passion in life. I am a writer, and the only day job I could ever dream of holding is that of a literature professor in college. Despite what haters like Zyreenesque say, there will always be a need for literature in the world.
And your homage to Maurice Sendak in panel 5 is simply an expression of how the arts will always be needed in the world.
We don’t have to justify ourselves towards suits like these, Gavin-sama. People like you and me are responsible for bringing social change in the world, working behind the scenes like the stagehands, make-up crew, film, sound and video editors and all the unsung heroes of a film crew.
From one writer to another, Gavin-sama…arigato gozaimasu.

I agree with the whole thing. I have always enjoyed art in its many forms While I was away at school I wrote (poetry and short stories) but the rest of the time I just like to make things beautiful (whether painting, sculpting or working in dozens of different media) I work to fill a need to fill a space on a wall, make a more comfortable pair of shoes, create a piece of jewelry or stained glass.
And I love to share my work (showing it but seldom part with it). I was careful to get back things made for my parents when they passed.

Ditto. I write lousy stuff, and I sing every chance I get. I’m alone most of the day, so it pretty much keeps me sane.

If it were me in panel 2 I would be more comfortable laying on my side. It would certainly make my soul grow.
Flippant remarks aside, nice comic, thx.
