Actually, Earl looks a lot like some of the very bright academics and super techs I’ve worked with. The flashy dressers aren’t always the brightest bulbs in the string.
To me, his choice says, “I’m old, I’m comfortable, I know my place and I don’t care what people think – not even younger women, anymore. Long ago, I realized I wasn’t going to be ‘discovered’ by a Hollywood agent.” Or so I imagine I will think eventually.
In the first panel, Earl said he doesn’t care what others think. That is the message of this strip. In the last 3 panels, Opel completely ignores Earl and goes off on her tirade about Earl’s lack of taste in clothes.
That, in a nutshell is happily married life. It is the lack of an argument when others would go off on each other. Earl could give a #$%!
I promise not to get all serious about this and write too long, but this is kind of an example how IQ scores were formulated and misused in the early part of the 20th Century. .People who dressed differently were often poorer or from different cultures than people who designed the tests, and naturally didn’t do well on them because they either couldn’t speak English or didn’t understand the concepts. They were assigned lower IQs and considered low class, intellectually as well as economically. .This attitude permeated our entire nation for years. Probably, it still does. An entire book about this subject is THE MISMEASURE OF MAN, by Stephen Jay Gould. .Everything has a background history to it.
When I was a kid, our income was low, but we got along. When my dad suddenly needed a lot of expensive dental work, we couldn’t afford what the dentist quoted. He selected a new dentist and showed up dressed in his shabby work clothes. He offered no history, answered all questions honestly, and got the work done at a price we could pay – with no bargaining or hassles.
My favorite saying – ‘We wouldn’t worry so much what people thought of us if we knew how seldom they did’. Think about your thoughts of other people when you walk down the street or thru the grocery aisles. Even if you do judge, it is quickly forgotten. Give me comfort!
At least they don’t look like the people from WalMart that are pictured in the emails all of us surely get! And yes, THE WALMART people DO EXIST! I have seen them!

You only get 20 points on a spare, if you had a strike in the previous frame.

He probably doesn’t even have ten points to spare.

I’d rather see someone dressed in “sweatpants” than squeezed into leggings far too small for the backside belonging to the wearer.

Any time someone begins a sentence with “No offense,” they mean to offend.

If it offends her so much, why is she willing to be seen with him. Seems she made a choice too. Well, a choice to degrade her hubby in public!

my husband wears sweats all winter, the elastic waist is way more comfortable and if you are retired you deserve comfort.

Why care what strangers think? They don’t care what you think or they wouldn’t dress as they do.

I’m female, 75.and agree with Earl. It’s all about comfort now.

Good thing Earl could care less. lol

It’s about comfort at home. It’s about self-respect when you’re out. Otherwise, you may as well have toilet paper sticking to your shoes as well.

I was with her till the last panel. I hate sweat pants and spandex unless you are in the gym. Old lady clothes are also depressing,

The problem is with Opal’s self respect – which seems to depend on how well Earl is dressed!
