Quill: "These are amazing"
Gunther: "Mom's a great cook. You're in for a treat"
Quill: "At home I had to make my own meals"
Gunther: "Guess this is your new home now..."
Quill: "Yup! And I always wanted a brother"
Gunther: "Me, too!"
It’s like a chemical compound… or even an atomic property… one side has something, and so does the other… one side is lacking something, so is the other… but something holds the bond together, and when the two elements/chemicals mix, something is lost, gained and shared…. this is a human version of that…..
what simpsonfan2 said. Its like Evans is doing what everyone else is doing – introducing a couple gay characters to prove he’s all hip with the LBGT community. Got a real “Brokeback Mountain” vibe going with this one (or these two as the case may be – I think he’s been setting up Gunther as gay for a couple years).
In the August 5th & 6th panels, Quill said he had to convince his PARENTS about returning to the US to complete his high school year. Now he tells Gunther that his father died BEFORE he was born. I think he’s a con artist. Working for TJ will reveal the truth.
“Sponsored” by….Utterleigh Goode and Sons Dairy… “From start to finish, our dairy products give you the energy you need to really move!” – Rob Boothe Foods… "Makers of Toll Booth Cookies…So good for home, or on the road! “Now priced at $7.99… But you can’t pass them by… even if you wanted to!” – and by..Scotty’s Textile stores…. “The princely purveyors of plaid products, and priced pretty properly… and as always, promising prompt purchasing!”… “Still in Princetion, and check out our newest purchase point in Pitts!”
Of course they have to be gay, because how could two guys ever get along as good friends without sexual interest in each other? Thank you comments section for turning a heartwarming set of strips into something you can hate.
Fans are getting a little over the top here. Two males can become friends without being gay.
Of course, there’s no football or baseball or hockey as an obvious connection to justify the friendship. The only possible explanation is…they must be gay. ( sarcasm).
With all due respect to gays, this type of thinking…or supposing…must only serve to make you all feel…so like a deer in a headlight. There is always some neanderthal who has to immediately draw such a prejudicial conclusion.
If these two characters were classed as such from the get go, the comment wouldn’t be as relevant. However, when a lovely young fellow and a quiet unassuming fellow are pronounced to be gay when that is not a fact, the commenter shows more about his own character than do the storyline characters.
Good grief! I am sick to death of hearing about homosexuals as if they own the world. What is the fascination with them?
*
Yeah, it’s getting old here. If either of these characters turn out to be gay, I’ll eat a hat. Horrors! Sharing a room—what’s the world coming to?! I have theories on what the fascination is with homosexual relationships, but they deal with why women like to read about them. With guys, I assume they’re insecure about their own masculinity—seeing gayness everywhere—or gay themselves and want to read about gay relationships.
@Michael Pearce…Gunther was the character who said he was born after his dad died, not Quill. As someone suggested, read previous strips to get a clearer picture.
Quill was an ‘accident’ child whose parents are much older. It follows from that that he has a lot more leeway in doing what he’d like to do rather than what he has to do.
Quill is a remarkable lad who would make any parent proud. They trust his judgment implicitely and are supportive of his endeavors…even sending him off to America to get a more international education.
oh please. Gunther has been pining for Luann for years and is not happily in lust with Rosie or whatever her name is. There’s been no indication that Quill is anything but straight. 2 guys can be ‘bros’ without being gay. There’s already a gay character in this strip anyway (Brad’s boss) so it’s not like Greg Evans has to “prove” anything to anyone by being “hip” If this arc makes anyone uncomfortable or creeps anyone out I think that says more about you than it does the strip
This is not a gay arc. Just because men express affection for each other does not mean they are gay. Gay or straight, affection and liking another person is a good thing, and those on this blog who are afflicted with this silliness need to check their intolerance bone, and get a life. It does appear that Quill needs a family life, and did we forget Luann, a hottie if ever there was one? Geeez Louise, catch a breath people. Oh and before I forget Rosa??? I hope we get beyond this prejudice, and enjoy this arc for what it is, introduction of a character who will definitely affect deeply the life of the person this strip happens to be about, and many of her friends as well.
So, the two guys each find what has been missing in his life and bond as brothers. Nice; heart-warming, even. Luann and Rosa will derive benefits from this, I’m sure.
I finally lost my temper enough to go look up what was meant by “three thumbs.” It’s a reference to a dream Luann had where Elwood gave her three thumbs up for her performance in West Side Story. I read the whole arc about the play and cannot see anything that seems like the remotest suggestion of anyone being gay. There is quite a lot about Gunther trying to swallow his jealousy about the attention Luann is showing Quill.
Man you guys are ridiculous tonight! Can’t two guys be friends without it being a gay hook up?? There’s nothing wrong with a gay arc but I seriously doubt this is it!
Okay, the gay speculation is just tired. Quill is not gay. He just isn’t. Not the way he looks at Luann.
Gunther wouldn’t be so nervous about kissing Rosa if he was gay. Trust me. I’m gay, and in high school, before I dealt with it, I tried dating girls. They didn’t make me nervous. Boys sure did, though. I just didn’t get why that was until later.
If ANYONE’S gay, look no further than TJ. He’s never shown an interest in women…he rejected Ann Eiffel and I think Tiffany?
Awwwwwwwww. What a SHAME, Q-Ball. It Musta been TOUGH getting the Food from the ’fridge to Microwave, Huh?Bet Your Parents Made You tie Your OWN Shoelaces, too Huh? The Monsters!
Geez, Poor little Pretty Boy having to FEND for Himself in the “Wilds” of His OWN Home. See what I Mean about these “Glamour Boys”, Gunth? He lifts one finger to Help Himself and Right Away He THINKS He’s a “Tarzan”.
But that’s Okay. Just Keep Feeding Q-ball Ma Berger’s “Amazing” Cookies and FATTEN Him Up. “Thanksgiving” is Just around the Corner….,
I dunno folks. This strip could be a legit “bonding of two brothers,” or it could be the “calm before the storm” when the discussion finally gets around to Luann! 8-O
Anyone want to take odds that Q decides to let the Bergers sponsor him for a “green card” and that he comes to live with them in the US permanently? Thus, his new “permanent” home, while Greg/Karen decide the future direction they’ll take with Lu, Q, Guth & Rosa?
when I was in High School we had a foreign exchange student every year and the student roomed with another student of the same grade for the year they were here. Same thing in this story. Also it was also the senior year.
I think a lot of you have taken the wrong track. Quill never had a brother only sisters. And Gunther never had a father figure or brother. I see this as Quill getting the home life he never had and Gunter finally having a role model to be more manly, like unbuttoning the top button of that shirt.
Just read your comment of yesterday about cooling down to 86 degrees. I’ve been wearing my North Face for a week now. I don’t know why anyone likes it here in the north…LOL
What is with all of the gay comments? Why can’t some of you just view this as it was intended, two guys who do not have any brothers finally finding someone who can be that person for each of them? Please do not make this out to be a gay thing. There is already too much of that in the news, please do not pollute this strip with your gay agendas and twisted toutings. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Or we might just be getting a chance to see two characters filled out some. What happened to Gunther’s dad? Why does Quill have to cook for himself at home? Be nice to see some characters fleshed out some more. TJ next, please.
Rainbow jello? When was that? And did he make it himself or did his mom? And it was Jesse Jackson, who spoke of the rainbow coalition as inclusion of all skin colors, by the way.
Could those of you twisting everything into “they’re gay” please cool it enough so that the rest of us can enjoy the strip as written? I’d hate to skip the comments entirely, but it’s really annoying—and disrespectful to gays in general. Oh… and Donny, you do realize that rainbow jello was a very popular dessert of the fifties, brought to many a potluck church dinner…
Maybe this can get things back on track (or at least provide something more worthwhile to discuss!) – http://metvnetwork.com/share/pillsbury-chocolate-chip-cookies-commercial-featuring-drew-barrymore
Quill mentioned in yesterday’s strip that he mostly fended for himself growing up, and didn’t have any close siblings growing up. Now he’s in a home where he’s being taken care of and has someone his own age and gender to hang out with, and he’s enjoying it. I don’t see their friendship as anything more than that.
Gotta love the homo-phobs. I feel sorry for those that don’t have same sex friendships with close brotherly/sisterly bonds. What a shallow, empty life.
Really? A kid having to make his own meals is because his parents don’t have time for him or don’t care? Geez, and here when my brother and I had to take turns making our meals, we thought it was one of our chores, like cleaning up our rooms and doing some of the laujndry. AND we also thought (silly us) that our parents were doing us a favor by helping us learn stuff we needed to know when we moved out to live on our own. But now you’ve entlightened me. It was either because our parents had no time for us or because they didn’t care about us….
You need to open your mind a bit more. There have always been families where both parents worked, or there was a single working parent, and kids would come home from school and start the meal. Today, there’s an explosion of reasons why kids are handling this type of work, not the least of which is the increase in diabetes and the need for a kid to keep his or her blood sugar balanced. The best way is to learn what you can eat and eat at regular, set times and that often means making your own meals. To me, the abuse of kid is DENIAL of access to food, not teaching the kid how to fend for himself or herself in the kitchen. Watch the Food Channel some time; they feature kid cooks a lot……………….. I’m sure you think it’s funny to compare cooking for yourself to driving yourself to school or writing an absence note, but you really need to take a second look.
There are some really sad people posting here today. I think this is a great arc. Nothing even remotely gay about it except maybe in the minds of the paranoid homophobes.
Over, I read your post. You won’t get a problem from me.
*
Thanks, joel, I didn’t know what Donny was referring to, actually; I just felt I’d get flamed by whoever was being a homophobe today. So far, I was wrong. Very glad to be wrong, too. :-)
A cooking rivalry between the 2 men would be interesting. Will TJ be able to handle being around a guy who is not only a better cook, but is good-looking and not stupid? He’s had years of being around Brad who’s gone along with everything he says. How will he handle it when Quill objects?^^Hey that would be interesting… which would be a first in a MPQ arc, on the other hand, do we really need another “I’m MPQ, and I can’t do anything wrong” Thread? Might be a lot better if MPQ couldn’t handle the job
Kids can leave home too early; it’s better to learn to be a responsible, adult member of a good home community (family, however defined) than to go it alone just because one is “supposed to at that age”.
If Gunther’s mother, a single mom on the low income scale, probably made some if not all of her own dresses and clothing, not to mention Gunther’s. My mother would make a lot of her own clothing and some of mine as well. Just being around that all the time, some of the skills rub off. Same with cooking. If the kids are not sitting on the couch playing video games while dinner is be prepared.
I realize now that when you said: “Espero que no sea más…”,I assumed the wrong intended “subject” for the sentence… I thought you were generally saying: “Hopefully you won’t be messing up the language anymore” (which would be fair, since it’s tough trying to keep Spanish, French and English going in the ol’ memory banks at times)….. but it was more in line with the unfortunate issue in question… With that, I’ll rephrase my response:– ¡Yo creo firmemente que no son más que eso! (I firmly believe that they are not !)
Look at the October 11 strip. Gunther’s dialog says “It’ll be like having a brother!”, but his expression and his hands say “It’ll be like living with a boyfriend!”
I was thinking about getting a Klingon dictionary, but I’m only halfway through Spock’s joke book… in Vulcan, of course…. – Everytime I look at the NASDAQ or the Bloomberg Business Report, I realize where Ferengi must have come from… – Actually, the Binary that Lev was referring to, that one species in TNG, the Binars speak that code….
^Yeah, that, too! – And since you said the “word” columns already, I am unable to refer you to the Greek Monthly Design Column in the paper…. oh…. I guess I still did… uh… sorry…
I think that’s part of the problem, too… the dialects of Spanish and related there, vs. the Carribean, Mexican, South and Central American dialects/versions of Spanish. – Another good example to me, is the difference in Brazillian, European and African dialects of Portuguese… so remarkable how there is even a tiny bit of difference in each region!….
Brothers And Sisters album, Allman Bros. Band“Boss Of Me”, They Might Be Giants (appears also on Malcolm In The Middle) – “Brother Mine”, Suzanne Vega“Daniel”, Elton John“Have You Ever Seen The Rain” CCR (based on Tom Fogerty, John’s brother and former bandmate who was leaving the group at the time) – “Sister Christian”, Night Ranger (cheating, but also politically correct, to include our dear female counterparts, so :-P, Lol!) -Believe it or not, “Sunny” was written by Bobby Hebb in response not only to the assassination of JFK, but also the murder of his brother, which happened close to that time…. though the lyrics are seemingly sung for someone named Sunny, whom he says he loves in the song, he had expressed that he used his appreciation for his brother as well as JFK to fuel the lyrics, and he’d hoped to keep a “Sunny disposition”, which is how the song got it’s name..
It looks like Quill and Gunther are going to get along famously! How sad that he had no-one special in his life to cook or bake for him, if only for special occasions… ;)
All the cheese heads are coming out this weekend for the vikes-packers game….ha! By the same token, minnesota is known for its art and we have some good microbreweries around here.

No way is Gunther gay. Just because he is a clothing designer doesn’t scream gay, and I appreciate Greg creating a boy who has and employs the skill.

Over, I read your post. You won’t get a problem from me.

JayBluE about 11 years ago
Yes, true! Also the “use it or lose it” thing… And the advent of some of the tech out there, and the changing styles of language use these days, too…

This gay talk is silly—- just because guys are simpatico doesn’t mean there’s anything sexual about it. Sheesh.

Look at the October 11 strip. Gunther’s dialog says “It’ll be like having a brother!”, but his expression and his hands say “It’ll be like living with a boyfriend!”

If there is a point of contention among them, Luann will be it.^^Yup

They say Gunther is gay because he sews. In classical American society, sewing is considered feminine, therefore if a male does it, he must be gay.
People who think that, probably never heard of a tailor.^^LOL, yup

I was thinking about getting a Klingon dictionary, but I’m only halfway through Spock’s joke book… in Vulcan, of course…. – Everytime I look at the NASDAQ or the Bloomberg Business Report, I realize where Ferengi must have come from… – Actually, the Binary that Lev was referring to, that one species in TNG, the Binars speak that code….
JayBluE about 11 years ago
