The only thing I understand about algebra – I look at my X and wonder Y.

Is Johnny suspended in mid-air in panels 1 and 4 (and if so, why?), or is there some artistic convention that I’m missing?

Quote from the movie Red Planet (2000)

Gallagher (=Val Kilmer): This is it. That moment they told us in high school where one day, algebra would save our lives.

One of the biggest benefits of Algebra is it is the introduction to abstract thinking. Prior to Algebra teaching is always about discreet tangible items – apples, oranges, etc. Algebra introduces the concept of rules and behaviors that can apply to any object.

Historically speaking, studying algebra was one of the major justifications for rooms not being cleaned up,

All this math talk brought to mind a book titled “Mathemagics”. It is a good read and plays with the notion that math is in fact magic. Don’t shy away from it because of the title because there is almost no real math mentioned beyond the names of the various disciplines i.e., calculus.

Dear Algebra,Stop asking me to find your x. She left you for a reason, and is NOT coming back.

    Thank you.

The cop clocked me at 105 MPH. I told him my X ran away with a cop and I thought you were returning her…

I struggled through three courses of Calculus at ITC, and by the time I retired, had used it only once – for a home project!(Graphing would have been about as quick)

And yet, I am glad I learned just plain old math. At least I can balance my checkbook, add 1 + 1 and get two. Also, if I’m in a store, and the bill is $7.27, I can give the clerk $10.02, and get back $2. 75 in change. Sometimes that extra 2 cents makes the clerk crazy, because they can’t figure it out.
