Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for October 17, 2013
Transcript:
Phoebe: Sam said she picked me not-last for dodgeball, and I quote, "at random." Isn't that awesome? Marigold: In what way? Phoebe: A cool kid a whole grade older than me thought of me as just another kid, and not as an obvious athletic liability! Even the word is beautiful! "Random." Marigold: Reach for the stars.

What’s with little girls you draw having a fondness for chaos?

yes reach for the stars…then crush them and toss them from the sky for being better then you.

I remember the day I was declared to be “one of THEM”. I was beaming all night.

With a unicorn you can touch the stars!

I think the big question is, is Sam a boy or a girl?

I simply cannot consider ‘Random’ a beautiful word, owing to the fact that one of the nastiest trolls I ever knew once used it as his web moniker.

: ) I like “obvious athletic liability” very much!

Be honest, Marigold, if she had said ‘unicorn’ was a beautiful word you would have agreed.

Thank you for this arc, Dana. I know how Phoebe feels. When I was a little older than Phoebe a group of girls in my grade whom I had always admired suddenly invited me “in.” Nothing exclusive, nothing nasty about it; it was just an invitation to hang out together. We remained close friends, with them even helping me though a difficult move away in high school. Changed my view of myself completely.

I actually DO remember that it was wonderful that there were “some” kids who weren’t thinking of me 24/7 as a “hopelessly doofy spazz.” I can relate.

random is a word you could build a publishing house empire on

I recently discovered the joys of Dana Simpson comics, and now I can’t get enough! I blazed through the Ozy and Millie archives in about a week, and now Heavenly Nostrils has become one of two comics that I check daily. Thank you for sharing your mind with the world, and keep doing what you’re doing!
