Of course Arlo said “…my hind foot”. “Hind”, maybe, or a variation of that word.

Come on, Arlo, even wandering pioneers got caught in the weather and were frozen stiff………….Oh right,… I get it, the price was not free…..What about the range? I suggest the oven instead, I’ve had fine results with that…..Is the classic Turkey dinner with the dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean salad, hot rolls, apple sauce, cranberry sauce, sweet potato, maybe a Waldorf salad, the best meal ever invented or what? I mean, I like a steak dinner as much as anybody, but nothing competes with Thanksgiving dinner….

“Free range” … cos it costs so much that they’ll give you a free kitchen range when you’ve bought ten?

I like the leftovers from Thanksgiving better than the original meal.

But will everybody PLEASE stop brining all the turkeys?

Way too much salt to be healthy, and makes them taste like processed lunchmeat anyway.

Spending extra for “natural unprocessed free range” bird, then turning it into something you’d buy in the deli makes no sense.

People have gotten so used to artificial fruit drinks, fast food, spicy, salty chips, and frozen entrees with chemical flavor enhancers that they think real food is bland.

Take a break from it!Get your taste buds back!

    Ok… sorry…. end of rant…

So much can be done with the Thanksgiving leftovers: turkey salad, turkey sandwiches, turkey dressing, turkey jerky, turkey pasta, turkey soda, turkey ice cream, Reese’s peanut butter turkey cups, power steering and automatic turkmission, Lady Gaga turkey dresses, turkey smart phone covers, etc…

This coming Monday is when our free range turkeys get the chop. Biggest is in the 35 pound range.

Amazing how many people suddenly want to be our friends around this time of year…

I drive through the countryside to go to breakfast in Lake Orion MI at least once a week. I often see real free range turkeys. I’ve even had to stop because a good dozen were taking their own sweet time crossing the road.

I have been getting free-range or “fresh” Hoka turkeys for years now, and it is definitely worth it. About $45 for a 16 pound bird.

You have to know what the terms mean, and the problem is that, unless you go to the farm, you cant. The “free-range” turkey or chicken or whatever that roams around on bare dirt all day and eats turkey chow tastes like its caged cousin. True free-range, meaning running loose in a rich area to eat grass and bugs (as a carnivorous turkey should) tastes like real turkey. Therefore, people in their ignorance think it tastes funny, and they foolishly shrink from the dark meat that is the product of all that exercise. Same with pork. The best hams are from hogs that freely forage for acorns and such.

Random observations: My mom, a Southerner, frequently used “my hind foot” as a vigorous expression of doubt. Varnes: Mmm with the earlier dinner description.Susan Shunshine: Right on! CPO CG: And Turkey Lurkey? Seriously, turkey tetrazzini, with linguini plus mushroom soup mixed with Old English cheese spread, a dash of Worcestershire, some milk (?) and extra mushrooms. My first thought upon seeing this strip was, “Where did Janis get such a small turkey?” I’ve most generally been unable to find anything small enough for our our family of two.(Not fond of dealing with mounds of leftovers.) One of my daughters, S, raised six free-range turkeys in 2010, and they were HUGE. One nearly broke S’s arm when she got whopped by a flapping wing. (They were also terminal stoopid and unconsciously cruel. My son-in-law found one that had been pecked to death after someone had spied a wound on it.) My husband swore by his mom’s turkey soup, which I found quite bland. So on Black Friday I strip what meat off the bones I can, boil the bones with onions, celery, carrots, and a touch of sage till the water turns all off-white, remove the bones, add meat, fresh veggies, and a little rice, and cook it. Thicken a little with flour and water. Not too bad.

Reminds me of all the charitable appeal letters I get every week bearing the words “Free Gift Inside”. Why do they say Free? I thought gifts were intended to be free.

On a similar topic, why are restaurant patrons referred to as “Guests”? Guests shouldn’t have to pay, should they?

Every now and then I nuke a sweet potato to eat. No salt, no butter, no sugar, not even cinnamon. .Folks talk about how unhealthful it is with the transfats and poisonous sugar. When I explain I don’t add all that other stuff, they assure me it isn’t good unless I do.Strange. I love America and all our people.

If she wanted to be nice to the turkey she should have bought something else. It was still killed for her.

Around here we have Canadian geese that don’t fly south stopping traffic. I like watching them. There was even a drake who hissed at the cars waiting .

The only true free-range turkey is the one you get a hunting license to go get.
