Should we use a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, halfdollar or dollar coin? Do you have one on you? You can have it back unless it loses……………you call it……….. Should we do 2 out of 3 to be sure?
If you discontinue it, won’t they become scarce and more valuable and defeat your theory? Will it be replaced by the Canadian penny? “A penny lost is a penny found.” (Government strategy quote)….
The Canadian penny is gone, discontinued. My wallet is full of nickels now. The coin is not anymore valuable, collectors have a few. All the cash registers round up and down, due to the tax percent.
Those who claim prices will be rounded up rather than down are not thinking it through properly. Most prices are not made to an exact dollar, but rather priced in a way to trick people into thinking that they are getting it for a dollar less than they really are. That is, an item is priced for (say) $2.98, and people say “Oh, that’s just $2,” rather than what it is, to all intents and purposes, namely $3. Do away with pennies, and the retailers will start pricing $3 items as $2.95 rather than $2.98.
The Nickle and Dime products are now sold for $1. It is time to shut down the Penny and Nickle. Might as well discontinue the $100 Bill- it is used mainly for illegal activities.

It just seems silly to me to keep making a 1-cent coin that takes 2 & one-half cents to make…
